That’s a pretty big 4.  Isn’t the 3.0 4 in the Porsche 944 the largest ‘mass’ production 4 ever?

I'm sure the engine will be fine for as long as the turbo bearings chill in a quality synthetic oil that is also changed regularly. I do wonder however why GM insists their trucks must have a brick-face designs, after all smaller and lighter engines should be easier to package and allow for a more aerodynamic hoods.

If by 'ever' you mean post WWII  then nearly so...according to Ron

If you are including trucks and tractors  then I suspect not the biggest.   I bet someone somewhere made a 4 litre 4 cyl gasoline engine for something or other!

Not the late eighties version? That was a 2.8L V6

GM is taking a lot of heat with their new trucks, main reasons:

1- polarizing design
2- underwhelming interior
3- the 2.7 powertrain isn’t competitive

I suppose if all one is going to do is idle all day it might display some competitive mpg numbers, but for general usage that little 4 pot turbo will be running full tilt and sucking back the gas like there is no tomorrow.

Oh I bet there's probably a BIG 4 cylinder diesel too in some commercial truck or similar!

The Series 50 Detroit was a 4cyl diesel 8.5L. Most transit buses throughout the 90's-mid 2000's had one. I love the sound of them, they were rough buggers though, they'd vibrate hood hinge pins down to nothing on trucks.

People on here will argue that this engine is more than good enough for "hauling air".....wouldn't want to tow with this or have a constant, heavy load of a fully loaded service canopy on it.
Lighten up Francis.....
