My new truck was oversprayed while it was at the dealer.
« on: November 22, 2018, 12:13:01 pm »
So my truck was at the dealership while they investigated a blown speaker (turns out it is blown, and they ordered a new one).

ANYWAY, I guess while it was in the shop, it got oversprayed with something.  It's black and hardened on the paint.  It is worse in one particular area (the passenger C pillar), but there are specs here and there over most panels of the truck, including the hood, sunroof, doors, etc.  I didn't notice when I picked the truck up last night.  I saw it for the first time when I was buckling my daughter into the truck under a parking lot light, and wondered what the hell it was.

So I took it back to the dealer this morning and confronted the service manager about it.  She came out and had a look, and while she doesn't know exactly what happened, took responsibility for it.  They booked the truck into their detail shop next week to give it a complete exterior detail.  They also offered me my next two services for free.

Anyway, should I be concerned about the process they use to remove this overspray?  It is a brand new truck, and the thought that my clearcoat may be damaged by whatever chemical/process they use to remove this crap is making me a little sick.  It is mostly localized in one area, but there are specks here and there on pretty much EVERY. SINGLE. BODY. PANEL.

This is not how I wanted my new truck experience to go...

That's why I'm on here.  I'm not a detailing guy.  I have no idea of these processes, and whether I should be worried.  If the consensus is that I shouldn't be worried, then I won't be.

Paging Shane. Shane to the courtesy phone please.

I would call, or drop by, the dealership and ask them how they'll fix it and if there should be any concerns.  Presumably they will have someone on staff who can answer you.

Sucks.  But at least they took ownership.

Did you try to see if you could remove it by hand at all? Like with your finger nail? Depends on what it is & how much it has adhered to the paint I suppose.

I’m not an expert, but it should come off the clear coat without damaging the paint.

Glad the dealer is stepping up and taking responsibility. Offering two free services is a nice touch too.

Or maybe the dealer had nothing to do with it? Park next to any mulch lately?

No.  It was fine going in, and I noticed this literally an hour and a half after picking up from dealer.

I can kind of take it off with a fingernail, so I supposed it hasn't adhered all that badly.  The service counter guy said they would use some sort of solvent on it.

Well scheisse!  I'm sure it'll be fine.  Was probably undercoating, so tar, right?  Some gas or thinner and it's gone.  Can't imagine they'd have sprayed box liner on someone else's truck, that's something they probably farm out anyway, so probably not that.  Hope it cleans up good.

^^I'm starting to be a little more okay with it.

Truck goes in on Monday for the detail.  I'm not sure how long it will take.  They're going to give me another rental for the time that its in.  No idea what the rental will be, but I'll be sure to post a review of my impressions.

It might not be a Toyota.  It's coming from the rental place down the street.  It could be anything!!!  I'm hoping for something with some cojones.  I don't want to go from driving a big stonking V8 to something with a puny, buzzy little 4-cylinder.  I had enough of that with the Rav.

I feel your anguish!

I don't mean to raise your anxiety level but check for swirl marks when you get it back.

That's the great thing about white. Swirls and dents are less noticeable then say black. ;D

Still it's a brand new truck and I can see where GBA is coming from.

Their detailer says they are going to use some sort of Bio-solvent that is safe to use on paint and windows.

Still, when I get the truck back from them, I will give it a thorough look-over before I accept it back from them.

Well that sucks!   :P  At least they're taking responsibility.

This reminds me of when i lived in my condo and building maintenance over-sprayed a guys classic MGB with parking lot paint.  Never bothered to ask him to move it first.  Just sprayed the lines around it.  Anyways, i just happened to be walking out to my car when the owner came out to see the damage.  Man, was he pissed!  I though he was gonna punch out the maintenance manager!  :o  Anyway, they fixed it and all was well.  That was almost 20 years ago and I still see the guy driving the MGB.  :)

That reminds me of the time I saw a crew at work cleaning up the parking with a leaf blower.  They were kind enough to make sure they cleaned off the cars too.

I wonder if they were undercoating something when your truck was in there.
