I like these little hot hatches... haven't been following the trend & mods too much on them though, so I'm not sure if the asking price of almost $16k is fair or not.

these things were a handful in stock form, modified they are an animal. Can't remember if they came stock with an LSD - if not that should be the mandatory first mod rather than more power!

The asking is a little dear, but this at least was modified well within reason with basic bolt-ons that were not hacked together from Home Depot supplies. I would say look at similar hot hatches of that vintage, and adjust offers accordingly.

These also rust badly, as with all Mazdas. I don't think they ever fixed the rust issue in the 3s, but I could stand corrected.

I dunno why anyone goes for top-mount intercoolers anymore other than "hood scoops look cool" because a good front-mount is way, way better for performance and packaging. My modified R53 suffered from this, to go bigger with the intercooler after dropping to a 17% pulley it would have needed a lot of work.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

My buddy had the pulley mod done on his R53 at the dealership and boy was it full of torque steer afterwards, it was nuts I remember! I can't remember if he had the LSD on his or not though? Bella had the LSD on her R53 and it was a hoot!! Kinda wish I kept that car for a track toy to just beat up on https://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php?topic=93315.msg1113981#msg1113981

yeah with the pulley it was a feisty little terrier, all mods made it about 220hp or so, not bad from the 1.6SC. It was a 2006 and it had the LSD, so TS was tamed and it was a riot in the corners.

Still considering one for my new winter car...it is perhaps my most loved former car.

Bella's was a tank in the snow, she never got stuck with it... plowed the road a few times even because it was so low   Last set of winters were Nokians on it & they were crazy good!

yeah mine was a beast too, low center of gravity with weight over the drive wheels really made for a fun little winter car

Would much rather another R53 than this Mazda TBH...

Because it's faster in the quarter mile... By virtue of actually making it to the end?

To put bluntly, yes.

Also easy to add power and mod a Mazdaspeed 3(or really any hot hatch). RX-8 bolt-ons do little.
