If you want to call me born with a silver spoon in my mouth or a rich swerver go right ahead but for the record I've purchased 4 cars since 2006. 3 have been manual transmission and 2 of those 3 were under $30,000.

And it's all relative anyway.  To the guy riding the bus, some dude picking up a used Audi and a Lexus IS-F in the same week is facking Bill Gates.

Pffft.  Seems that way to a guy driving a 7 year old Grand Caravan, too (not much better than the bus...)

If we do a survey of auto.ca cars with manual transmissions, would the % manual uptake be > or < than that of the industry.

I would guess about the same...

I think it would be significantly higher.

I wonder...

Based on autotrader, there are 124,734 new cars for sale. Of these, 3,238 are manual, which is ~3%. A decent approximation of industry uptake in Canada.

I guess we would have to poll whoever here has purchased a new manual car/suv to find out. I know of a handful, including me.
I love it when a plan comes together.

I've only ever bought ONE new car, and it was a manual.  So, 100% of the NEW cars I've bought have been stick?

Out of the 8 (7 used) cars total that I've bought in my car-buying life (15 years), 5 of them have been manual.  My last 2 were automatics, simply because we are a one vehicle family, and my wife refuses to drive a stick.  Unfortunately, my next one will also be an automatic.  But that's because I'll be getting a truck, and you can't get a fullsize truck with a manual anymore.  It's too bad, because if I could, I would.

So, I guess I'm not putting my money where my mouth is...

I would say yes, 100%. From the industry perspective, they see you as manual person when it comes to new cars :)  What car btw?

All my new car purchases were manuals - 94 MX-6, 98 Cherokee (lease), 2001 Dakota, 2008 Altima & 2014 Wrangler... I was/am doing my part

Used car manual purchases - 86 Mazda 323

Used car slushbox purchases - 06 V70 & 15 JGC

So, I guess I'm not putting my money where my mouth is...

I buy all my vehicles new, with the exception of my wife's latest wagon, which I bought with 8000 km on it.

My first car, the 20V quattro coupe, was only available in manual and I wouldn't have bought it any other way. It was my grad present from my dad and I have never enjoyed one of my vehicles as much since that one. Other than that, my only other manual transmission was in my GTI.

In my defense, I would have bought my S4 wagon in a manual, but they were available in such limited quantities (I believe they brought 3 into Edmonton that model year) that I had to search high and low across the country to find a wagon and there were no manuals left to be bought. I waited too long to treat myself to that car - I thought about it for over a year. Had I bought it sooner, I would have been able to get the manual. Interestingly, when I traded it straight across for a new Odyssey (because our third child, unexpected on top of everything else, ruined my life!), the dealership network advised immediately that they were interested because they had several prospective buyers that were waiting for S4 wagons - but would only buy one if it was automatic. That surprised me as I often caught flak from other driving enthusiasts that my S4 wagon was an automatic. Yet, in the resale world, it got snapped up immediately BECAUSE it was an automatic - and fetched what was, in my opinion, a ridiculously high amount for resale value. (to be clear, I also ridiculously overpaid for this car in the first place) I was very surprised at the time of the trade-in as I thought I'd do much better selling privately, but walked away very happy - when it came to the money end of things.

On a final note, and this has completely derailed from talking about the G70 I reviewed here, the evening I brought in my S4 wagon and drove home the Honda Odyssey was the only time I shed a few tears over a vehicle. That was a rough night. This third kid better be worth it some day.  ;D

I bought my manual used. However, it was never offered with an automatic anyway.

The Mazda3 I ordered in 2014 had an automatic because the GT trim level was only available at first with the automatic. Wasn't a deal-killer.

Yeah I would think higher as well.   Definitely more than that 3% estimate.   But probably still below 10%.

My purchasing history:

2005:  05 Mustang GT with manual (new)
2010: 10 WRX with manual (new)
2018: 12 335i with manual (used)

So...I'm a manual guy for sure.  But still I've only purchased two new manual vehicles in the last 13 years (and none in the last 8 ) and my wife's cars have been all auto.

New vehicles I've bought with a manual: '87 Pathfinder, '99 Civic, '00 Xterra, '10 GTI.

New vehicles I've bought with an automatic: '07 Suburban

Used vehicles I've bought with an automatic: '11 Yukon XL

My next vehicle will likely be bought new, and also with a manual. But that's probably 5-10 years away, so I guess I'm still part of the problem. :-\

Will there be any cars made with a manual Transmission in 2028, or will they all have VFDs 🤔

^^ My next car will have a manual. Even if it means I have to move up my buying schedule to get the last one.  :)

Realistically, though, I’m pretty sure the next GTI (MKVIII) will still have a manual. If it’s introduced here in 2020, that means I should be good at least until 2026 or so.
