I learned this weekend, that my generation of Mazda3 has 'indirect' TPMS, similar to VW, where the wheel speed sensors detect low tire pressure.

While I miss the ability to check individual tire pressures from the screen, I have to realize that my car spends 5 months of the year wearing winter tires, and I've never bothered to put sensors in the winters, so I've always just put up with the TPMS light being on.  The indirect system is probably a better fit for me and how I do things.

When did that generation get TPMS ? or was it an option ?. My sister's 2015 GS sedan doesn't have it ?

I thought it was a requirement for all vehicles to have it...

Not in Canada...yet.

I think most cars from that era, if they had TPMS, worked the same way. I know my 2007 Outlander works the same way.

I think the domestics moved to the ridiculous radio frequency battery powered garbage earlier than other manufactures. My grandma's 2000 Buick had the 'indirect' system using the wheel speed sensors and had a handy reset button in the fuse panel, but my 06 & 07 Cadillacs use the direct RF system. They both give pressure read-outs in the dash, but swapping wheels, rotating tires requires a whole gamut of BS, never mind sensor batteries that die and requirement replacement (which required a re-balance of the wheel).

I miss the days when drivers were in tune and accountable for their tire pressure....

IIRC, the 2011 Volt (us only) had an embedded mode to (re-)match TPMS, not same as described by Firm above, user has to let out some air from each tire to be noticed by its TPMS and then, re-match it one by one, as seen YT https://youtu.be/DxCnVMuVqlo (FR)

MY2012 & later, need a TPMS learning tool, such as https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=EL-50448 to relearn.

My Caddy's can learn via the 'let the air out' method, or via a programming tool. Both methods are a crapshoot....The DTS seems to like the programmer and the Escalade likes the 'air out' method. But both always require multiple attempts and usually bring me to the brink of giving up before finally working.  :banghead:

Never had problem with the learning tool with actual/previous Volt but never gave a try with the air out method. I should try on my 2014 Volt to check if it still a valid option!

I've always done the "let air out" method on both the Suburban and Yukon, and I can only remember one time that it didn't work and I had to go to the dealer to have them use the reset tool. Bought the Suburban in 2007, so that's like 28 tire changeovers. I find that if I follow the instructions and be patient, it works just fine.

But, I was disappointed to find I have a bad sensor in the winter wheels now. The reset worked fine when I did the switchover last week, but one tire read too low for a few days, and now it's not reading at all. First issue with a sensor since 2007.  :(  And it's doubly disappointing because that was a new OE sensor I bought just a couple years ago with the new winter tires. Not sure if I'm going to bother replacing it...  :-\

It made me curious so I looked up some Mazda 3 Canadian brochures. They didn't get it until 2017, all trims.

The 2012 Odyssey has in-wheel sensors, not owning a programmer and doing the swaps myself I left them programmed for the winter wheels - that's the season where you want to know if something goes wrong. By the time I exit my street the car will have "read" the sensors and the light goes out. TPMS light stays on all summer long, I just ignore it.

2017 Audi has the very simple (for once) indirect approach, like my VW before it, swap wheels and do nothing.

2014 Accent has no TPMS at all.

Ditto 1975 TR6  ;D

Thanks for that.  Good to know I shouldn't rely on it, then, and will have to monitor my tires the old fashioned way.

Car was literally on the drive on hoist for 20 minutes.

Car comes off hoist....driver side headlight burnt out!

Easy, really.

The radiator garnish plate up top comes off.

Then 3 Torx per light. 2 come out completely. The 3rd loosens but stays and is a guide of sorts.

Plug probably most difficult part. Those always seem to fight me.

All fixed though. I was just incredulous that everything worked prior to rolling on ramp..and was bulb dead 20 minutes later. LOL [emoji38]

Here's a video if you care.

Did you have the bulb on-hand? Did you replace both sides or just one?

I ordered a couple since this happened on Thursday.

I had a "spare" back from the TT but I prefer 4300k over 6000k

And yes, I did both.
