So much confusion in this thread.

List of fwd cars with real mechanical limited slip diffs:

Civic Type R
Civic Si
GTI (both base and autobahn have this in the Canadian market, but it's poorly advertised)

VW made this change for 2018 for the Canadian market, but the brochures and dealer info showed incorrect info stating the base car had the XDS that's just electronically manipulated system.  Once owners started getting the base cars they confirmed the real mech. LSD units were on 2018 base cars too.

Golf R doesn't have them in front or back.
perhaps current, but many past models had mechanical LSDs as well, as I posted.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Yes.  My 8th gen had one, and so did the 9th gen.  Before that, it's possible that the Civic SIR also had one.

No, don't mistake the "eLSD" term for the purely electronic system in those VW products. The Veloster N has a highly-sophisticated multi-plate clutch-type limited slip differential with electronic control, hence the term eLSD. It's still very much a mechanical system, more robust than the Torsen-type units in competitors, but with precise control linked into the vehicle's overall performance management software.

It’s been pointed out already, but yes, that’s the same kind of electronically controlled mechanical LSD as in “those VW products.” Well, the GTI anyway.  :)

Finally someone stuck the one thing on a wrong wheel car that can make it competitive, an LSD!!! Nice work Hyundai, and it doesn't look like an autobot sex toy, cough cough Civic Type R cough cough.
Finally? Mini did that from 2005 on their R53. Cobalt SS had an option. Mazdaspeed3 had one too. Neon SRT-4 could option one. Even the MS Protege could get one. Some foreign makes had options for them too (Alfa had an option on the later 3.2 V6 cars)

Nice that Hyundai gives it to their hot hatch. All higher hp FWD cars should have them as standard IMO.

GTI has one, although only on the loaded model, unfortunately.

Don't  forget ... last-gen Prelude and early 2000's Sentra SE-R

Civic Si and both the Ford Fiesta/Focus never had one and it was a travesty.

You're joking, right?  8th gen and 9th Civic Si had a limited slip diff.  I'm not sure about the current generation.  But I know sure as hell that mine had  Torsen limited slip.

The Honda Civic Si has a Helical limited slip differential.  As mentioned the GTI, Golf R come with eLSD much like this Hyundai.  I'd assume the Civic Type R has one as well as the Focus RS, but not sure about the Fiesta ST or Focus ST.

Cool. That should have made it into the article !

So, this begs the question:  This, or GTI?  The GTI is objectively the nicer car with regards to exterior and interior styling.  Having 4 real doors helps, too.

But the Veloster N has a 50hp advantage.

Probably GTI for me.  It's always been the "mature" - ahem  :-[ - hot hatch choice.  And while this Veloster N isn't the mouth-vomit outrage of wretched styling excess that is the CTR, it's still a bit too extroverted for me.

Now if we got the i30N here - different story.

The 50hp does it for me....plus its not "Fast and Furious bro" like the CTR, so I can drive it in public without people thinking I'm driving my teenagers car.
Lighten up Francis.....

I'd really would like to drive one of these to see how well (or not) they can put the power down. I'm not talking about race track smooth pavement but on real roads that I drive and in the cold and/or rain.

Currently with my GTI with a +1 tune anything but perfect conditions it is hard to go into full boost without a serious loss of traction and that is on my summer tires (Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3), forget doing it with winters (WS 80) on the car.  In the rain, think twice before passing and grabbing an extra gear with full boost. On cold dry roads, no problems getting the wheels to spin at 80 kph.

Personally I think there are limits for high HP in FWD applications. Maybe I just need to drive something new?

AFAIK FWD can put down about 300hp with decent suspension and LSD, anything above that needs serious work. That is why most touring cars, being FWD, are around the 300hp mark.

I saw that, and I agree with Doug. Styling seems appropriate for a hot hatch.

It really does look good, and exactly what a hot hatch should look like.  It's more interesting than a Golf, but not as overwrought as a CTR or Focus RS.

Hyundai/Kia (and Genesis) are really hitting some home runs these days.  They have a good solid lineup of cheapo compact cars/CUV's, midsize sedans/CUV's, Sport/Luxury Cars, and now a true, bona fide hot hatchback.

All they have left to add to their lineup is an SUV/truck with some decent towing capacity (8000lbs+).  Then they'll have a vehicle for all customers.

i'm not sure of the towing specs, but the Hyundai Santa Cruz truck was given the green light...it is expected to launch for 2020.

Kia had the Borrego way back when. Proper SUV, BOF, V8, 4x4, 7 pass, and could tow like 7-8000lbs. Not a bad looking thing either.

Oh ya, forgot about that beast.  Assume that was a re-badged something-or-other?
