the "skinny" tire thing was more from the days before winter tires...the increased force applied to push through the snow was good to have in all seasons...today, you are best to use winter tires that are similar to your OEM tire size...don't go crazy in width, and dropping a size ratio is fine, but having a decent size contact patch is a benefit with modern winter rubber.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

My dad kicked himself for not getting some alloy rims for winters just because of the weight of the bastards....I remember loading those buggers into his Avalanche almost made me drop a testy.

Yeah, just got the rims last week and they weigh 36 lb each. I’m not 100% sure, but seems like the 17” aluminum rims are around 23 lb, so it’s a significant difference.

Tire weights are within a pound, so looks like the steel rim/tire combo is going to be 80 lb, while it would have been 68 lb with the alloys.

Still, going with the alloys & 17” tires would have cost an extra $40/corner. And I enjoy switching it up with different summer & winter rims. I like the 17” stock aluminum rims, but it would have been weird having two identical sets. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself now. Might have a different opinion when I actually try to lift the suckers.

Couldn't agree more!  Here's what I have on the TT.  Skinny tires with a small contact patch work great in offroad rallying (something I have some experience with) but are way too much of a compromise given the tractive properties of today's premium winter tires.

I’ve heard that the point of skinny tires on rally cars is to dig down through the snow to get to solid ground underneath. Great if you have 400 HP and don’t mind spinning the wheels and shooting rooster tails everywhere you go, but not overly useful for a daily driver.

those are special purpose built vehicles...they also use studs...different beasts altogether from a regular car, on regular roads, driven daily.

Got the new tires installed yesterday. LT265/75R16 Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 studded on steel 16”x7” rims.

Overall, I’m pretty happy. They definitely fill out the wheel wells better than the 245s I had on before. And I like how they look on the 7” rims as well: a bit of sidewall bulge, but not too much. I’m definitely old-school on this. A truck should have small wheels & lots of sidewall!

Just need some ice and snow now.

I had Hakka's in 1996 on my MX-6, they're an amazing tire! Looks great & I'm sure they'll rock!

Looks like a trucks should, and not another mall crawler.

Bonus! Just sold the old rims and tires on kijiji for 350 bucks. I priced them cheap for a quick and easy sale and it worked. Placed the ad yesterday afternoon and sold them this morning to the first guy who responded. Nice, younger guy who should still be able to get some decent use from them on his work van.

Second bonus, which I didn't mention earlier, was that the manager of the Kal Tire where I bought the new tires is a guy I've dirt biked with. I didn't expect any special treatment, but he hooked me up with a nice discount. Saved a couple hundred bucks there as well!
