Subaru edges closer and closer to beige, as they want. Beige sells.

Didn't they at one point have an ad campaign championing that they were not building....exactly what they are building now?  :rofl2:

I love the title, as there is decidedly nothing sporty at all about the new Forester.

The only Forester I would consider would be a manual turbo model.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Why anyone would buy this over the upcoming Rav4 is beyond me.

Looks like the new turbo'd Ascent is the better buy over this.

Yes this is a giant yawn.

Subaru is building a spiffy new dealership here in town, so i guess they're making money.

Bland Sells.  Quirky doesn't.  Toyota's been doing bland for years, and they're the largest car company on the planet.

Yeah, but Toyota sells because of actual (or perceived) reliability.  Subaru doesn't exactly have that reputation.

Their dedication to AWD is what has given them a loyal following.  And the Outback is their top selling vehicle because it basically competes in a field of one.

Why anyone would buy this over the upcoming Rav4 is beyond me.

Why not?

I for one, as a shopper in this class, I have two very subjective reasons not to get the Subaru - 1. CVT, 2. shallow cargo bay (under the cover), but most people will not have my issues. However, there are few things that would go in Forester's favor for me - better AWD, higher ground clearance, standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and auto-climate control, cloth seats in mid trims with extra equipment.

None of them are particularly attractive to me design wise - inside and out, but none is ugly. Fit and finish, details, material grade are very similar between the late Subaru and Toyota vehicles -they are good but nothing special, so that would be a wash.

If I were to get either one it would be a pure rational choice for long term ownership, not pleasure of ownership so any would do just the same.

Why not?

A bunch of reasons.  The Rav has more power, will be better on gas, has a conventional auto, will likely be more reliable.   Resale will be better. They are ultimately both bowls of vanilla ice cream, so to me it makes more sense to get the Toyota for vanilla based reasons.

Granted if you aren't going to be keeping it for more than 6 years the Subaru becomes more compelling.

As for your points:

- better AWD

I am not sure this is true any longer, it appears Toyota put a lot of work into the AWD system.  At the very least, it's going to be a moot point for most buyers.

-higher ground clearance

I assume the Subie will have more but I haven't found the specs for the new Rav.  I did read a motortrend article that said the Rav gained an inch and a half of clearance.  So it's an inch less than the Subie.

- standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and auto-climate control

This is coming to the Rav.

Well it is when you consider that they had proper AWD and then decided to go for an inferior system for 1/2 mpg.
