Subcompact Crossovers
Jacked-up Underpowered Hatchbacks.

Decent enough suburban appliances all around. I am surprised with the Kicks. My pick would have been the Mazda.

I am glad that the trend is going lower and lower for these things, and soon they will return to hatchbacks, but tack on a little plastic cladding, call it a crossover, and the masses will never know the difference.

But they are thinking they are targeting the hipster market. Hipsters would not buy these things, they are too mainstream...too expensive. Hipsters would love to buy a mint Volvo 240 Turbo or GLT Wagon with longboard racks rather than these things.

If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

i'm not overly surprised the Kicks won it...i've been reading up on it and checked out the build and price a couple of weeks ago for it...i think it looks great, comes very well equipped, and is actually affordable in higher trims...sure, no AWD, but throw on some quality winter rubber and it would still get around town just fine.

Out of these, the Kona or CX-3 for me. Maybe another CrossTrek.

The only reason for me to consider one of these is AWD. I wouldn't even darken Nissan's doorway.

Looks like Nissan nailed the demographic then.

These should have AWD as an option or Kicks and C-HR should get a new segment title.  The C-HR is not even near segment leader in sales when HR-V, Ttax, and Encore all double it.

FFS Norm, stop trolling and trying to inject GM into EVERYTHING.

The C-HR is not even part of the test, neither is the HR-V. Let alone the craptastic Trax and Encore...they are not even worthy of being put alongside these newer Cute-UVs. They sell well possibly due to "Murica" buying impetus (even though they are not as they are built in Korea, China, etc.), brand loyalty, or that they were one of the first subcompact CUVs out there and people just don't go anywhere else.

I knew if I viewed your blocked post I would see some trolling GM-centric garbage. I have only myself to blame.

Old men like us and/or living in the prairies. There's not much need for AWD when the young-ish/urban driver rarely ventures into the wilds.

Yeah. You're right, of course.

I don't understand it. My Passat has a huge cabin, huge trunk and still gets better fuel economy than any of these. 6.3L/100km at 120kph in cool wet and windy weather on the trip to Winnipeg and back, while still having decent power.

It is like "I don't want a tractor to plow the fields, i will buy this Lotus because it is trendy."

The Passat is pretty much the antithesis of cute and trendy for sure. I hope it sticks around for a while. I don't want to be forced into a form-factor I don't want just because it's cute and trendy.

Cue my old codger comment:   Cute and trendy pretty much summarizes the entire direction of the Country these days.  Style over substance.

I would take a lightly used VW GTI over any of these.

i think fuel economy score shouldn't have been so heavily weighed, to favor FWD-only competitor when everyone else was sporting AWD(and resulting higher price).

Driving thrills makes my wallet lighter.. and therefore makes me faster because i'm shedding weight... :D

So the Trax is selling twice as well as Honda/Toyota? Perhaps the T in NormT stands for Trump.

He said the Encore as well which is missing from that list, but 990 (938). And he said the HR-V, Trax, and Encore double C-HR sales which is not true for any single model, the Encore comes the closest at 1.72x.

Perhaps the takeaway conwelpic intends from these numbers is the truly strong consistent sales (2017- 1322 2018- 1394) for the "dated, no AWD " Kia Soul which hasn't changed much since 2014. He's enjoying his second one. Sometimes you get it right the first time...
