Found my copy of Carguide from 1999 which has specs and prices of all the cars for sale in Canada that year. I was surprised by how expensive cars were then. In the last twenty years inflation in Canada has been 47%.
Some examples:
1999 Range Rover 4.0SE: $84,000
After inflation: $123,500
2019 Range Rover HSE V6: $112,000
1999 Toyota Corolla VE: $15,090
After inflation: $22,200
2019 Toyota Corolla CE: $16,790
1999 Honda Odyssey LX: $30,600
After inflation: $44,500
2019 Honda Odyssey LX: $35,290
1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lardeo: $37,195
After inflation: $54,700
2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lardeo: $45,395
1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 4matic: $70,450
After inflation: $103,600
2019 Mercedes-Benz E300 4matic: $63,100
1999 Golf GLS: $17,500
After inflation: $25,725
2019 Golf Comfortline: $22,500
1999 BMW M5: $85,000
After inflation: $125,000
2019 BMW M5: $113,300
1999 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe: $52,870
After inflation: $77,700
2019 Chevrolet Corvette 1LT: $64,895
1999 Dodge Grand Caravan: $24,985
After inflation: $36,700
2019 Dodge Grand Caravan CVP: $31,245
1999 Lexus ES300: $44,235
After inflation: $65,000
2019 Lexus ES350 Signature: $45,000
There are some exceptions of course:
1999 Ford Mustang GT: $27,995
After inflation: $41,200
2019 Ford Mustang GT: $40,189
1999 Ford F-150 SuperCab XL 4x2: $24,095
After inflation: $35,400
2019 Ford F-150 SuperCab XL 4x2: $37,449
Of course, in all of these cases today's car is safer, has more power, better fuel economy, more features, etc. Luxury cars were particularly expensive 20 years ago, and the lower prices today partly explain why the luxury market has grown so rapidly since then.
Anyways, just thought it was interesting to compare the prices.
