Cars were expensive twenty years ago
« on: September 19, 2018, 09:10:52 am »
Found my copy of Carguide from 1999 which has specs and prices of all the cars for sale in Canada that year. I was surprised by how expensive cars were then. In the last twenty years inflation in Canada has been 47%.

Some examples:

1999 Range Rover 4.0SE: $84,000
After inflation: $123,500
2019 Range Rover HSE V6: $112,000

1999 Toyota Corolla VE: $15,090
After inflation: $22,200
2019 Toyota Corolla CE: $16,790

1999 Honda Odyssey LX: $30,600
After inflation: $44,500
2019 Honda Odyssey LX: $35,290

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lardeo: $37,195
After inflation: $54,700
2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lardeo: $45,395

1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 4matic: $70,450
After inflation: $103,600
2019 Mercedes-Benz E300 4matic: $63,100

1999 Golf GLS: $17,500
After inflation: $25,725
2019 Golf Comfortline: $22,500

1999 BMW M5: $85,000
After inflation: $125,000
2019 BMW M5: $113,300

1999 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe: $52,870
After inflation: $77,700
2019 Chevrolet Corvette 1LT: $64,895

1999 Dodge Grand Caravan: $24,985
After inflation: $36,700
2019 Dodge Grand Caravan CVP: $31,245

1999 Lexus ES300: $44,235
After inflation: $65,000
2019 Lexus ES350 Signature: $45,000

There are some exceptions of course:

1999 Ford Mustang GT: $27,995
After inflation: $41,200
2019 Ford Mustang GT: $40,189

1999 Ford F-150 SuperCab XL 4x2: $24,095
After inflation: $35,400
2019 Ford F-150 SuperCab XL 4x2: $37,449

Of course, in all of these cases today's car is safer, has more power, better fuel economy, more features, etc. Luxury cars were particularly expensive 20 years ago, and the lower prices today partly explain why the luxury market has grown so rapidly since then.

Anyways, just thought it was interesting to compare the prices.

This is very interesting.  Thank you for sharing.  I like how the Lexus ES is basically the same price that it was 20 years ago.

One of the things that I think has made a big difference is car manufacturers are able to produce cars at a reduced price compared to 20 years ago.  Advances in technology, process, etc., has certainly affected the car industry greatly.

Thanks, this is interesting. I sensed that luxury cars were becoming more affordable, these numbers validate that.

The Corolla is surprising considering the advancement since the '99 model year.

They have also moved a lot of production to various lower wage countries.

They have also moved a lot of production to various lower wage countries.

That's not the case for most of these examples, the Golf being the obvious exception.

The stronger Canadian dollar is also a factor of course.

True. The dollar was .65-.68 US for much of 1999

Maybe not for the specific models, but by saving production costs on certain models (Hungarian-built Mercedes CLA, Slovakian-built Audi Q7, US (non-union plant)-built BMW X5/6, for example) the manufacturer may not need to price other models in the line-up as high as one would expect.  They may look at profit across the brand versus profit for a specific model.

It sure is the case - many parts that go into a car are not made in NA anymore and instead come from different parts of world...I.e. Ford brings transmissions from China, etc...

I remember in 1998 when it cost as much as $1.60 to buy a US dollar.

IIRC it was $18k in Canada ($32k in today's money). Which put it out of reach at the time.

That's quite an epochal edition eh?  NSX, Miatta, LS400, and Q45.  Reminds me that i saw a Q45 not too long ago.  They're a rare sight but I still see lots of LS-400s around.

Yeah, the Q45 never saw a lot of success. It was a lot sportier than the LS400 and that wasn't what the market was looking for.

The 1994 facelift was supposed to address that but I'm not sure if that helped sales or not.

I have this Auto Guide from 1988 on my shelf.  Was kinda neat flipping through it last night.

The most awesome thing from that era were the pantsthe model is wearing. They were riding/flying inspired and omg, they were awesome. My wife had a pair and she couldn't figure why I agreed so quickly that she should buy them as they were hella expensive. Amy Adams rocked them in Night At Thr Museum...
