As usual, everyone complains about the as-tested price and ignores the fact that you can get a more basic config for a lot less.

Base Boxster GTS: $95,000
Standard color: $0 (white/black/red/yellow)
6 speed manual: $0
Heated seats: $610

That's really all you need. You can save a few more bucks if you opt for the Cayman GTS.
Good luck finding one with only this option
a couple of years ago on motorweek Zack asked a Porsche representative about average option on a Porsche and he said about  18000$

Sure, but you can order exactly what you want as well. No one is forcing you to take what the dealer has in stock.

of course, but a base Carerra is $104,000...if you're spending $95k, you might as well spend $104k and just get the 911.

My local Porsche dealer has a few base 911s in stock.  It's not a unicorn.  A base Boxster GTS would be - it's a top end trim level, they're going to load them up to wazoo.

One of my old buds from the PCA was pondering selling his 1989 911 turbo (there's a unicorn for you, a G50 930) and for $hits and giggles we stopped by there to see what the dealer would offer on trade on a new GT3.  And yes, he really wants a new GT3.

Their offer was $45K trade.   :rofl2:

They had a black/black base 911 on that lot that I could easily see myself buying.  They also had a pretty well used looking 2001 Boxster they were asking $26K for -  :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

Yeah...at a $115k thats well into 911 territory. No thank you.
That's deep into used GT-R and 911 TT area....I just couldn't go Boxster.

It totally depends on what you're looking for I guess.  If you want a Roadster, which is what I would be interested in, a GT-R wouldn't enter the equation and a 911 TT Cabrio is a lot more expensive.  For myself personally, the Boxster GTS ticks a lot of the right boxes.  YMMV of course.
I feel ya.

But even this over a Boxster is a no brainer for me despite being used.

How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

That's pretty sweet.  But also hard to compare something brand new to something almost 11 years old as well.  Personally, I'd still take a new Boxster.  :)

But maybe I'll now save up for a new Huracan Sypder though.    ;D ;D

It may be old, but the tech and capability in that car is miles ahead of the Boxster.

The Boxster is entry level. The 911 Turbo is among the halo cars.

Well once you've driven a 911, even some years old, many cars feel quite inferior.

Maybe, maybe not.  Hard to say obviously as I haven't driven either one.  I think I'd still lean towards a new Boxster, but that's just me.

Well if you love Boxsters "just because" or it's always been a favorite car of yours, I don't think anything would sway you. You like what you like.

Having had the opportunity to drive many Porsches, on its own the Boxster is great! There's is no doubt you come away impressed. I mean..IT IS a great car...one of the best.

And the turbos are another animal completely. Well, the 993 and later ones anyway.  The 930/964 cars are fast 911s, the 993 was the start of making the turbo more than a 911 with a bunch more power, and the 996 and later cars are 911s built to a ridiculous level of engineering.

As usual, everyone complains about the as-tested price and ignores the fact that you can get a more basic config for a lot less.

Base Boxster GTS: $95,000
Standard color: $0 (white/black/red/yellow)
6 speed manual: $0
Heated seats: $610

That's really all you need. You can save a few more bucks if you opt for the Cayman GTS.
of course, but a base Carerra is $104,000...if you're spending $95k, you might as well spend $104k and just get the 911.

You can play that game all day and end up in a Ferrari 488.  ;D

But seriously, a GTS has a bunch of performance options that a base 911 lacks. Sport exhaust, sport chrono, 20" wheels, PASM, PTV, sport seats and steering wheel...

The 911 Carrera T is a more fair comparison and that model costs $116,500.

fair enough...i'm just saying, in my hypothetical situation, where i've got about $100k to spend on a car, it would be the 911.

For me, it's a 911 all day long over a Boxster, or Cayman... I've driven all 3 and the 911 is my personal "within reach", "halo" car  :rofl2:

My plan was to buy a 997S this summer/fall, but the stock market hasn't been as kind to me as I was hoping for  :banghead:

Yeah but NOBODY buys a base 911. You're going to want at least some options and you're easily going to get to $10,000-$20,000 more on even basic :censor:. Even when I build one fairly stripped out with just some sport options I always get to like $20,000 in options.

I actually know someone who got a super basic one. 911 C2 with PDK, 20" wheels, heated seats, sport steering wheel, and painted centre caps.

Interesting. Although I suspect that's over $5000 in options still?

On the flip side they hold their value well and I suspect some options would help you on the resale side.

It is, most of that being the PDK.

If you look at the Porsche forums there seem to be a handful of things that a lot of people deem essential. Sport chrono and the sport exhaust seem to be the big items.

Uhhh....I bought a base 911 (which I believe you drove).  My 1999.  I did it deliberately.  It was near impossible to find....and the best I could do was base+leather package.

The base care was the lightest, most pure 911.  That's why I wanted it.
