That and the fact it offers no advantages over a touch screen mean it's a dying technology.

To me it offers very clear advantages over a touchscreen.

Yea, but he's like....

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Just like radio ?  ;D
Hey, I still listen to radio ! (In France, Luxembourg, and Belgium)

It's funny how backwards the Germans are. They studiously listen to it, and it's on the drivers license test question bank ("Why is it important to listen to the radio........").

The correct (multiple choice) answers are that it
  • Keeps the driver informed about current road conditions.
  • Alerts the driver to potentially dangerous traffic situations (e.g wrong-way drivers, stopped vehicles in roadway)

It's worth noting that Dot-matrix signs are generally not in use on German autobahns (downtown Frankfurt is an exception).

It is a pretty common complaint with the Lexus system.

Quote
We all agreed that the console-mounted “mouse” needs to step into a mousetrap. For those blissfully unaware of Lexus’ Remote Touch infotainment controller – and we envy you for that – it’s a joystick-and-button affair that mimics a computer mouse to access functions on the non-touch screen. That’s fine when you’re sitting at your desk computer, but when you’re driving over bumpy roads and paying attention (we hope) to traffic, it’s annoyingly difficult to first get the cursor to the right spot, and then make sure it stays there while you select the function.

As Lesley put it, “Seriously, critics and drivers have complained about the mouse controller long enough that surely it should have found its way to the bottom of the Mariana Trench by now.”

If you read the manual, you know the book that comes with the car, there a section to change the   Sensitivity of the mouse just like on a computer  :o, amazing

Working through the menus isn't hard to do and finding the sensitivity settings is no big deal.  It still doesn't improve its usability enough when driving to make it worth keeping.

I was fine with touchscreens before I had my Mini but as soon as I played with iDrive for a bit I was a convert. It's also a touchscreen and I used it as such literally once when I first got the car.

Some advantages of a controller-based system:

- No fingerprints on the screen
- Can use the controller with gloves
- Don't have to concentrate as hard on the screen when interacting with the system
- Navigating through menus is quicker because you don't have to awkwardly scroll with your finger
- iDrive also has shortcut buttons to various screens like home, media, map, nav, etc

The newest versions of iDrive really are fantastic. And they keep improving them. The version in my Clubman is noticeably better than the version in my wife's Cooper.

That's the same with the better systems like UConnect. Important or frequently used stuff is one touch, rarely used stuff is further down in the menus.

There is the issue with fingerprints, but microfibre is cheap.
