especially lame for small cars and convertibles. Very useful for towing and big trucks.

I've always wondered on how effective they are in winter, when slushy conditions prevail.

All it takes is:
-  splash off another vehicle,
-  winter tire spin off,
-  venturi effect snow drifts (https://www.evilution.co.uk/files/info/venturi3.jpg)
-  or even backing into a soft yet high snowbank to make a mess of the rear of your car.

The above also applies for dirt on the road.

How much of a problem is it to keep the backup camera clean?

I can't even count how many people have come in within the last few months complaining to me that the cvp van doesn't have a back-up camera... they seem to think I'm taking them out of them, or selling them an unsafe vehicle... they actually get mad. can't figure out why.

also, I really can't figure out how it makes it all that less likely to back into people... I have to think most people don't back into a person *right* behind... more likely they are walking from the side which isn't going to be noticed unless you have cross path detection... in fact, you are probably MORE likely to back into those types as you are now focused on the screen rather than the mirrors/over your shoulder that allows peripherals.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

You people are nuts. This is great news. Even if you don't feel that you need one, they are absolutely useful, have no significant downsides, and best of all, make it less likely for someone else to back into your car... Think about someone other than yourselves.

says the guy who doesn't buy/sell cars practically ever... heh...

as much as I love the technology, we NEED cars to stay affordable. adding extra tech, adding extra costs, adding extra complexities that will break should be an option.

But the cost of a screen + camera is negligible these days. Most cars have a screen anyways.

Its not (just) the cost. I don't want one. Its unnecessary presence in something like a Miata offends me.

A camera without distance sensors is useless. The later is more important in making a tight squeeze into parking spaces- fish-eye lenses tend to distort distances.

the screens that are negligible in cost are crap.

alos, try to tell the guy who just had to replace his 8.4" in his ram for over 3k that they are cheap...

but I do get it, and think they are great. but I just feel they aren't as necessary as people claim. I hate to ever rely on that kind of tech...

I think a camera is a better than a distance sensor. My wife's Mini just has the backup sensors and I'd much rather it have a camera instead.

Actually, cameras aren’t required:  “The rule says that cars and light trucks (in this case light truck includes most HD pickups) built starting today need to have a back-up camera or some sort of really good rear window to comply with the regulations.”

I spent a couple of hours in an A3 loaner that had a camera. I have also been in a M-B E series with the 360 birds eye camera.
Being old and stiff I am convinced...I want one.   Theoretically I could fit the official Audi one to the Q5 as the Technic variant had one but I'll wait until the next car.

I agree that in something like a Miata a camera is unnecessary and I can imagine cursing at the camera if it got dirty in the winter.

Next thing for the government is to mandate a washer nozzle for the backup camera when people will still run over their kids because the camera was dirty.

I had/have a backup camera in my DD for the past 5 years and while I find it useful I rarely glimpse at it. I trust my eyes better.

The hidden camera in the Golf is a smart thing worth the risk of replacement at one point. The one on the Ford was useless in the winter. I gave up cleaning it after a while.

The only time I use one on my Mazda 3 is when some idiots box me into a parallel parking spot.

Other than that, it is particularly useless in the winter since -due to its unprotected location and design- you'll drive 5 minutes and it'll be covered in muck.

I also wonder what this means for the likes of MB, BMW, Audi, etc. who have their backup cameras included in VERY expensive option packages.  Will those option packages now become (HORROR!) standard?

The Lexus camera stayed pretty clean over the winter
Wing said the Equinox camera stayed clean the week he had it
