Some day our children will rebel against us by wanting sedans.  I look forward to it.

And the ghost of David Bowie will respond:    :rofl2: :rofl2:

Rebel rebel, don't you drive my car,
You will not like it, it's too high by far,
Keep your 4 doors, I want my 5,
Hot damn, I hate your sedan jive!

Look on the bright side. There could be some silver linings here.

- More hatchbacks / mini CUVs (which are basically hatches...). Something like a VW Golf. This is a pretty sensible format for your "default basic car" vs a sedan IMHO.

- The sedan itself will probably remain as a prestige format. Think S-Class etc. Its going to be a high-dollar thing now with 2-box machines taking up the mainstream. I also don't think certain "iconic" sport sedans will go away, such as the 3 Series, but I could see Audi canning the A4 some day, with buyers meant to take up the Q5 or S4 depending on taste.

- The selection of CUVs will expand again to cover at least in part what was lost with the death of the mainstream sedan.

Those who lose in this are people buying a mainstream sedan as a compromise between practicality, driving dynamics, and cost. Basically the people who bought a V6 Altima or Accord etc - dads who want to keep some vaguely interesting drive. But that apparently a shrinking market.

Didn't they just come out with a new Focus and Fiesta (which at the moment is not in NA)?

It's sad but to be honest I'm not a huge fan of their sedans over the past 20 years anyway.  Sure the current SHO and Fusion Sport are somewhat fun but in the volume models they're just boring.

As long as they continue to offer a Mustang, with a V8 and stick I'll keep Ford on my list of manufacturers I'm insterested in.

Apparently the U.S. is only getting the Focus Active and not the regular hatch or sedan.

Right?  I think that's third in my top reasons for getting a hatch.  #1 is practicality, #2 is looks.

I do wonder if escalating fuel costs will drive people back into sedans, catching Ford with their pants down.

I dunno.  Genesis only does sedans and Ford now says it will only not do sedans.  Who knows.

Genesis CUVs are coming.

all my ranting and frothing of "the end is nigh!" doesn't seem so crazy now does it?

I do wonder if escalating fuel costs will drive people back into sedans, catching Ford with their pants down.

The company has said every new Ford or Lincoln vehicle introduced over the next two years will have either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid engine option, which should buffer against rising gas prices as the vehicles get bigger, according to Hackett and Jim Farley, Ford president of global markets.

This isn't surprising at all, add some plastic cladding, 1" lift and some sort of pseudo active name to a hatchback and people will line up for weeks to buy it.
Lighten up Francis.....

The market has displayed a strong preference for jacked up hatchbacks (CUVs) and pickup trucks. Ford is just specializing in those. Disappointing for those that who like a Ford and that is not their preferred format. Ford will lose some sales but I except they hope to make it up with larger margins per sale. There are other manufacturers that still offer sedans but I suspect the choices will narrow further in the next couple years.

.... and what's wrong with it?

Provided interior/cargo space is not affected by trying to make them "stylish", they have an AWD option and decent powertrain, what's not to like about it as a DD? Bring them on.

My fear is that the engines/power on these hatches (assuming more will be available across the board including from the premium brands) will continue to shrink for the sake of marginal fuel economy gains. Most likely the 2.0L Turbo with 200hp+ will become more rare while 1.5T will become more common.

No, I don't want SUV-like ground clearance for a compact hatch because it will look silly (e.g. Crosstreck 8.7") but I would not mind the the Golf Alltrack (6.9"), Mazda CX-3 (6.2") or somewhere in between looks. On-the-road driveability will still be car like not SUV-like while having that extra 1" will help when you have to deal with snow.

In Europe they had this kind of hatches all along and they look just fine - VW Golf 4Motion, Volvo V40 Cross Country, etc. The Focus Active has good proportions too - still looks like a hatch not SUV.

As for cladding - I would pass on that but I think it will come with the package.

Nothing at all, I just don't think manufacturers stopping sedan/hatchback/wagon production should be surprising to anyone.

All Fords were SUV's at one time:
