My father had a first year four cylinder/5spd Contour that wasn't bad. The V6 ones are terrible. Poor quality, hard to work on, grenade like auto transmissions. To top it off Ford cut back on quality after a couple years. I see more Topaz/Tempos survivors than Contours.

The Contour/Mystique suffered from the Jacques Nasser cost cutting measures that damned near ended up killing the company.  Real missed opportunity.
Never let the bean counters have complete control.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

So true.  Toyota and others know that investing in systems and quality is the long term strategy to saving money.  That sounds too nebulous to many executives and is really hard.

because most executives aren't interested in long term thinking/plans (they won't be around to reap the rewards)...they think short term, maximize bonuses, then move on and ruin the next company but pad the wallet doing so.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

Glad to fuel leak turned out to be minor. Do some research on the fobs, I am sure there's a way to program them with the dealer...

Glad to fuel leak turned out to be minor. Do some research on the fobs, I am sure there's a way to program them with the dealer...

I have found some instructions on the Jag forums on how to reprogram the remotes. The car appears to go into "program node" OK (red light in console blinks as it is supposed to) but either both remotes are not transmitting or the car isn't receiving. I don't get the response (flashing light on console) I am supposed to get from pressing fob buttons as instructed.

Turns out the fuel issue may not be so simple. Hard starting now (cranks 3-4 seconds before firing if cold....OK if hot) and strong smell of fuel. Appears to be leaking around the rail on the right bank. I checked that area last night and it appeared wet but it was hard to tell much in the dark. Further investigation today.

Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

Just came in from moving the car across the driveway. It actually left a trail of fuel droplets when I did so. After parking it I pulled the cover off and powered up the ignition ....quite an impressive spray of fuel out of the area of the pressure regulator (where they replaced that O ring.)

Not my car....just a generic internet photo but the red circle is the area of the leak.

Well, the good news is that at least you know exactly where the leak it coming from.

As for the remotes; some auto parts stores have little signal detector machines that can confirm if your remote it outputting a signal. Out here PartSource stores all have it, but I am pretty sure there is no PartSource out your way. Canadian Tire might have it, but it'd be hit/miss depending on the store.

So, I was in CT today and they have that tester. (part of a display selling batteries and 'universal" remotes....but nothing for Jags) I only had the one remote with me but it came up as "no signal received...bad battery or defective remote".  I'll try the other remote next time I am out that way.

edit

Other remote also tested as "No signal or bad battery" (has new batteries installed)  Ebay special on the way so we'll see.  :-\

So.......................fuel pump replacement underway.  :(

OTOH......The new valve cover gaskets seem to have slowed the oil flow considerably.  ;D

I was showing a friend this thread a couple of weeks ago, and this morning he bought a 2000 Jaguar XK8 rag-top.  It's a one owner car with only 80K on it!  Crazy.  I'm excited to see it, he describes it as a time-capsule car.

In a bizarre coincidence I also need a new fuel pump on the starboard engine in the Sea Ray   ::)
