That’s funny because when me and my wife test drove the cmax 2017 last summer we did the same thing. We drove out the dealership and then short drive down the road and returned it immediately. I really wanted to like it but it was a huge let down.

What was the trigger?

It HOWLS when you accelerate. It's insane.

I know a Chevy dealer if you want one  , they sold Volt across Canada if you can't locate the right Volt into your neighbourhood

Very noisy under acceleration and doesn’t really move. My wife said that the car has no soul. After that fiasco she test drove the volt and she just loved it. We test drove the volt 3 times, the 3rd time we had the volt for a day and she drove over 150 km and was super impressed. She wants her volt in blue and the only option she wants is the bose audio. We are waiting for spring to hopefully order one for her. I think the volt is not advertised enough and the car is just so great (my opinion).

I should say that I really dislike car shopping for myself. The process is awful. I think I would really like truly fixed price shopping. Hard to make that kind of systemic change though. How do dealers compete? The whole model would have to change.

With used cars there are a lot more variables which makes it even worse. I had a great experience shopping for the fit. This time not so much. And I barely test drove anything.

I'd say HR-V if he didn't complain about the moaning of the C-Max.  The HR-V is a great vehicle for pi's preferences, minus the engine.

I think the Golf/wagon would be the right call here.

No, that's a MkVI. First year for the MkVII is 2015.

So the main thrust is a stick.  and why not.  This gonna take some deep thinking @ $20K tax in.

Stickshift is indeed a strong consideration.
Deep thinking as the budget is too low? Or that there's a lot of choice? If the options grow a lot with a small growth in budget I can consider it. A few of the available golf wagons are over that and I'm still willing (and able) to buy. The key is not too much budget creep or I'll end up in a Honda Clarity 

How about a stick shift Mazda6? Quieter, more refined than a Mazda3. They depreciate quite heavily so you can get a newer model with low mileage:

Now that is an interesting choice. Especially with the jag interior  . Seriously though methinks a trip out to Orleans wouldn't hurt. Thanks!

If you have any questions about the Mazda6 I may be to answer them.  I owned a 2015 Mazda6 GX manual.  If your going to test drive one, be sure it's the manual.  Some believe the auto feels a bit underpowered.   I find the manual a bit more peppy.  Some of the complaints were noise on the earlier years, for 2017 this was addressed, and many other updated.

No, that's a MkVI. First year for the MkVII is 2015.

My guess is a Golf of some sort, either a GTI or 4motion AWD Sportwagen.  Both manual.
