I suspect any car you get would get flooded if that sh!t happened again.

I think your best bet would be a Golf of some sort - be it a wagon or a hatch, it fits your needs pretty well.

^^ you're nuts if you think those fit the bill.

I mean, for me, sure, but for pi?  He's all about the hatch booty and not paying Audi-prices for upkeep.

I'm thinking outta the box a little... maybe push him into something different  :rofl2:  The GLI isn't a bad option, HUGE trunk, manual and a good highway cruiser  ;D

Go back to a focus. Hatch 5 speed manual. 2015-2016 year. Se with Leather sunroof, without the mft package. Good used buy. Mine is at 1500000 km and still going.

A nice suggestion, it may be silly but I think I'd like to experience something new. I still have access to my parents' 2013 when in NB so I get that fix sometimes.

Unfortunately either in 2015 or 2016 it no longer became available in hatch with the stickshift

I suspect any car you get would get flooded if that sh!t happened again.
>:( you're probably right. Doubtful it'll happen every year in any case. I've now learned first-hand why comprehensive insurance exists.

Hatch booty is definitely preference. But GLI is interesting for sure.

I'm likely going to try a golf wagon over the weekend.

With price creep I'm now somewhat thinking about a new golf wagon AWD. It comes out to just over 30k all in, 0% financing for 36 months. I probably won't let myself go this route but I'm still considering it.... Then I get close to the clarity in pricing.

Take home message: don't buy a car you don't want just because it has more ground clearance that would make it better capable of withstanding 2' of floodwaters in the rare event that your parking spot floods again.

Gurgie, come on...now you're putting him in Quebecois FGCs?  Pi's our friend!  Friends don't let friends buy Quebecois FGCs!

Hey, I did a 250km radius search for GTI's around Ottawa... that ones not too bad actually, and I wouldn't consider a GTI a FGC (look at OliverD's GTI experience)... as for the Quebec thing, we have/had at least 5 cars that came from that province in our household issue free.... well 2 are in the fleet right now & are issue free thus far  :o

Je parle français so québécois cars don't scare me.

Seriously though the salt is as much an issue in Ottawa. Lots of lease returns come from Quebec anyways, especially stick shift ones

The flood comment was also tongue in cheek :p.

GTI is just a way to get me on the track isn’t it! I do like them but prefer the mk7

Well I made a detour on the way and may have made a decision that costs more than double that car :shuffle:

Drove the following cars today, and I thought I'd share my thoughts:

2013 Ford C-Max Energi: The interior is really nice. Well equipped. Nice size, and once inside you can overlook the ugliness of exterior styling. However, it sounds AWFUL when you accelerate with *any* level of enthusiasm. It was insane. I basically turned around and returned the car.

2014 Corolla: Leaps ahead of the previous generation. Very competent. Stickshift felt like a chore so I didn't want to buy it.

Some other car: stay tuned.

I should say that I really dislike car shopping for myself. The process is awful. I think I would really like truly fixed price shopping. Hard to make that kind of systemic change though. How do dealers compete? The whole model would have to change.

With used cars there are a lot more variables which makes it even worse. I had a great experience shopping for the fit. This time not so much. And I barely test drove anything.

Gen2 volt was too small, do you find gen1 bigger? I know it only has four seats which isn't the end of the world. Definitely an option though there aren't that many for sale.

I'm almost 6'2", 230 223Lbs, I have a lot a head & legs clearance in the front but rear seats must be restricted to 5'8" (?) or less.
I don't think Gen1 Volt is more spacious when compared to Gen 2 but It feels definitively more airy, more an open space to me.
Interior color make a big difference, same about touch feeling between leather and vinyl steering wheel, etc.

I know a Chevy dealer if you want one  8), they sold Volt across Canada if you can't locate the right Volt into your neighbourhood ;D

Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

That’s funny because when me and my wife test drove the cmax 2017 last summer we did the same thing. We drove out the dealership and then short drive down the road and returned it immediately. I really wanted to like it but it was a huge let down.

What was the trigger?
