Am I missing anything?
« on: February 05, 2018, 05:12:05 pm »
I'm now quite seriously looking at a Honda Fit replacement. Waiting for a cheque now.

I'm all over the place. So far I've somewhat seriously considered:
  • Honda Clarity. Decided it's too expensive and not a reasonable choice for someone who doesn't car commute
  • Toyota Corolla. It's a sensible choice but so was the fit
  • Scion/Corolla iM. Same as above.
  • Lexus CT200h. Really like it. But I'd prefer a manual. It's also quite snug
  • Ford C-Max. Rather ugly but sounds like it drives well. I will test one tomorrow.
  • 2015+ VW Golf Sportwagon. Hard to get a manual but there's one in Orillia I might check out if I head to Kitchener this weekend.
  • Subaru XV Crosstrek. Intriguing choice (probably wouldn't flood? who knows). Others on the forum seem to have found them underpowered
  • 2014+ Accord Manual. Might be big and I've never actually driven one

I think I still have a strong preference for a manual. Not quite a deal breaker but close. More willing to overlook this for PHEV or Hybrid.
Full electric doesn't look practical for my situation at this point.

I want a car good for camping/highway trips; miata is out. Seriously though the highway noise on the fit was my biggest complaint and I really would like something quieter.

Thinking 20k is the top end of the budget, preferably including taxes. There is some flexibility. Financing is a consideration.

Am I missing any really obvious choices? I don't like the civic or mazda 3. Same goes for the korean options.

I think the fit is an excellent choice for your requirements and budget

Have you considered a Honda hybrid with a manual transmission.  I'm talking about a nice used CR-Z, would be nice and unique, give you the manual and sporty drive you crave, and the fuel mileage you seem to want.  Only thing is that it's a two seater but doesn't sound like you need a crazy amount of space regardless.

I don't think I'll get another fit. I loved the car but life is too short to own the same thing again.

The highway noise, and revving at 3400 rpm in sixth gear at 120 is a bit tiresome, especially with the amount of road trips I do.

I did, and there's one locally. I might test it. A two seater would work most of the time but I do often have family visit, do road trips, etc. It's also my only car.
I think the CT200h is as small as I can reasonably go.

As per you signature, your Fit is a 2015. Are you ready to take the depreciation hit to lo let it go?

Is Gen 1 Volt a candidate?

Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

Pas de choix. Written off, pending some final paperwork. In fact I bought it used and the depreciation hit over the year would have been quite small.

Fit and the Corolla im would be my choice of the above based on your criteria.  The accord manual would be my preference but might be hard to find.

If an Accord is on the table, would a Camry hybrid work for you?

You really should get an EV , especially a Tesla Model S , just think if you drive it for 100 years , it will pay itself off  ;D

I would second the Chevy Volt. I have extensively test drove it and will be my wife's next car.
How about the chevy Cruze sedan or wagon? Those are quiet cruisers and they also look good.

C-Max...it will have a big boot for those camping trips, performance is on par with modern compacts but fuel economy is still very good.

That cheque will be far too small to be useful  >:(

Gen2 volt was too small, do you find gen1 bigger? I know it only has four seats which isn't the end of the world. Definitely an option though there aren't that many for sale.

Good point. Accord is on the table because I'd get it in a stick. Camry hybrid is an option but I think I'd prefer a hatch vehicle at that point.

thanks for the thoughts everyone. It's possible I'm after a unicorn. I will try the golf wagon, corolla, and cmax soon.

So the main thrust is a stick.  and why not.  This gonna take some deep thinking @ $20K tax in.

^^^^ Oooh, that new 2017 mazda 6 is a seriously good deal. Would they want to get rid of it bad enough not to charge freight/pdi?
Otherwise from the list above, it begins and ends with the manual Accord  ;)

The Mazda 6 was a great suggestion.  I was a passenger for a short trip in a manual one a couple years ago and was really impressed with how upscale yet sporty it felt.  Don't know what your budget is, but that 2017 would be mighty tempting and at least worth finding out just how low they would go.

Stickshift is indeed a strong consideration.
Deep thinking as the budget is too low? Or that there's a lot of choice? If the options grow a lot with a small growth in budget I can consider it. A few of the available golf wagons are over that and I'm still willing (and able) to buy. The key is not too much budget creep or I'll end up in a Honda Clarity  ::)

How about a stick shift Mazda6? Quieter, more refined than a Mazda3. They depreciate quite heavily so you can get a newer model with low mileage:

^^Apparently you get a Jag interior for that black one.  :rofl2:

Hell you can get a brand new 2017 for a bit above your budget:

http://www.autotrader.ca/a/mazda/mazda6/toronto/ontario/5_36269015_on20071212112039092/?showcpo=ShowCpo&orup=6_9_9&pc=K2J%206B9&sprx=-2

Now that is an interesting choice. Especially with the jag interior  :rofl2:. Seriously though methinks a trip out to Orleans wouldn't hurt. Thanks!

A 2018 Elantra in the GL trim can be had in a manual, and looks like a great overall package.  On the Hyundai build site, it came to $18,217.  If you wanted the hatch (Elantra GT in the same trim), it came to 20,717.  They both come pretty well-equipped too, apple carplay/android auto, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.  Not sure on how quiet the cabin is though.

Go back to a focus. Hatch 5 speed manual. 2015-2016 year. Se with Leather sunroof, without the mft package. Good used buy. Mine is at 1500000 km and still going.
