I had a 1987 GTI MkII Twincam with 123 bhp. Still fairly light. That was a hot hatch alright.   By 1995 it was just rusty enough that I couldn't justify the $$$ to restore it.

Would absolutely love to find a low mileage,  manual transmission, Lapiz or Night Blue Golf R.

May my former Spark EV won't qualify as hot hatch with a top speed electronically limited (it was like hitting a glass ceiling) but it was quite a crazy fun Kart to drive with 402Lb-ft 0-2000rpm, 0-100km/h in 7.5s or so.

The Bolt is even better !!  ;D
Gone but not forgotten in chronological order: 2019 Volt, 2013 Volt, 2014 Spark EV, 2012 Volt and many others before...

Very nice! I test drove that 16V GTI back in '87 and loved it. Didn't buy one, though.  :(

Sometimes I think I'd rather have a cherry MKII GTI than my MKVI.

The original MINI was not really a hatch, the new one is, and in JCW trim it certainly is hot.

A few missing from the lineage:

Forgot the Alfasud, arguably the very first hot hatch.

Forgot the Saab 99 Turbo. Turbo power for the masses before anyone else.

Renault 5 Turbo - the proper Renault hot hatch of yore

Ford Escort Cosworth - blue collar crazy turbo power, rally legend, dat wing tho...

Lancia Delta Integrale - rally god

Renault Clio Williams - racing team pedigree

Fiat 500 Abarth - a Ferrari for those who are poor

If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

The Pug 205 in the pic is NOT a GTi!  Also, the Simca 1100ti (1974) should be on the list as well.

Suzuki Forsa Turbo came before the Swift GTi.  In Canada we also had the wild little Innocenti DeTomaso Turbo for a brief while.

Alfasud wasn't a hatch until the facelift (3-door arrived in 1981 and 5-door was added in 1982).

R5 Turbo was only a 2-seater and was mid-engined.  Hot hatches still have to work as "family" transportation.  So CRX is more a coupe - Civic SI is the hot hatch...
