No Mazda2 for USA.....
« on: May 25, 2015, 07:46:20 pm »
No Mazda2 for the USA.  They only get to have the Scion iA.  It's great that it comes here.  But losing a big market like the US sucks for Mazda.  Most of the car is Mazda, and the USA gets the Scion only?   I wonder if this is part of a deal with Toyota.  "If you want our V6/hybrid technology, then you can't sell the Mazda2 in the USA".

To compare apples to apples, I posted sedan pics.  Trying to be unbiased, the Mazda2 looks better to me.

I bet it has more to do with sales than Toyota.

The 2 non-existent in the US.

For sure, but that 2 was over priced due to it being Made in Japan, and more basic transportation, compared to this one...

Small cars don't sell enough to make a profit in the US. End of story.

It's like the Merc B-Klasse.

So why is Mazda making a small car for Toyota?  Person buys a small car, then they have a family, maybe want a midsize sedan, or CUV, then family grows, bigger SUV.  The dealerships need to maintain a rapport with the customer so the customer comes back to change vehicles.  No small car, means less people getting into the dealers....

Most people skip the subcompact step and go right into a compact (i.e. Mazda 3). Sales prove that.

Proportionally, Mazda sells way more 2s in Canada than in the U.S. though sales have dropped off substantially (high of 9k in 2011 to ~2500 last year).

Of course, the 3 has become a lot better in that timeframe which has likely impacted sales. Hopefully the 2 will be priced competitively in Canada. I can see it selling 6-8k units a year if packaged and priced right.
