Really love the idea behind the BlueMotion Passat, and it looks quite production-ready. 150hp is enough for the average driver and this car should follow traffic just fine. Mazda had it right for a year with the 2.0 in the CX-5, and then quickly relegated the small mill to the base fwd version. Should have kept the engine option accross the range - it felt fine for me in a test of a CX-5 GT in 2012.

Hopefully, VW will have BlueMotion versions of the Golf and Jetta, too. For city drivers, the TDI can't touch hybrid mileage, but the simple approach they have here will work, and probably at a great price too.

The Passat BlueMotion Concept is an exercise in getting the most out of gasoline engines. Eschewing diesel and batteries, the German automaker has fitted the midsize sedan with a 1.4-litre TSI engine equipped with cylinder deactivation and stop/start technology. This combination is expected to return mileage of around 5.6L/100km while producing 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.

Could there be a more vague measurement?

Interesting that they are starting with the Passat for this engine, thought it would be better in a Golf and replace the 2.slow. Too bad we can't get the Polo with this engine.

That engine is already available in the Jetta lineup

Yes, forgot about that. Since I`m a hatch guy I`d still like to see this in the Golf. Maybe the MKVII will get it?

EDIT: Isn`t it only the Jetta Hybrid that gets it?

Exactly - it's only in the Hybrid, with all the electric gizmos. It would do wonders in place of the old 2 litre. Would love to also see the twincharger version of the same engine over here (sold in Europe, it has a turbo and a supercharger - no lag, and turbo tuned more for the top end).
