Subaru Towing / Add ons
« on: December 18, 2013, 03:14:38 pm »
I didn't think this should go in the tech section so I put it here.

Does Subaru offer any sort of towing upgrade / package like heavy duty transmission cooler & heavy duty alternator???

Or is this something one would have to go after market with?

Good question.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you won't get a straight answer from Subaru Canada...it seems like (other than trucks and some truck-based SUVs), most MNFRs don't want to touch "towing issues" (likely for liability reasons).  But I'm sure there are lots of Subaru owners (and dealers) who have dealt with these towing issues, and could provide some answers.

Huh? The question is whether Subaru Canada sells a towing package. I suspect the answer is no, but one way or the other, a straight answer should be easy to get.

Besides a hitch, I doubt it.  But what model and what transmission?

A tranny cooler is easy enough to buy aftermarket....heavy duty alternator....I dont really see the reason for needing one.
Lighten up Francis.....

Subaru did (does?) sell a towing package for some models.  I understand it has a hitch and harness, but no trans cooler.  You have to source that aftermarket.

Like most Subaru OE stuff, it's far more expensive than other options.

The Outback 3.6R which has 3,300 lbs towing capacity.

I would think at the very least a tranny cooler should go on (when planning to tow)

?

-- all the other vehicles have various upgrades with the tow packages.
So with the Outback not having anything, it would add to the costs. (to get it added)

I threw on a tranny cooler on a buddies older Gm truck. It was a thing of beauty, super easy to install, you cut the lines going to the OEM cooler built into the rad and just spliced in. We went one step further and completely took the OEM cooler out of the system and just bought an upsize external cooler and it had a built in bypass valve. Really, it was only about two hours of work and really easy to do.

Keep in mind that similarly equipped Subarus have higher towing ratings if you leave North America, maybe you just don't need any add-ons.
