You mention an over boost on the 2.0 so it must be a turbo but the numbers sound like a NA engine these days.  Are they correct or typo?

Really?  221 lb-ft from a NA 2.0?  Not likely.

That's all you noticed?  How about 189 hp from a 2.0 turbo in a premium car?  You think that sounds right?  Really?

In a car the size of the Mini I do think it's about right.  And even still, there aren't many 2.0lL NA engines putting out that kind of HP and none that kind of torque.

It's not that far off the current GTI.

Is the Cooper S using a variant of the BMW N20 engine similar to what we get in the 320i? The numbers seem similar. The 320i makes 180hp and 200 lb/ft. If so, that surely opens the door for the 240 hp / 260 lb/ft that this engine puts out in 328i guise.

Sounds possible.  Checking around it says the 2.0 is a BMW sourced engine.  Seems like a strange choice for this car.  A low pressure turbo engine is for base non sporty versions of heavier cars saddled with automatics, not the optional engine for a light weight hot hatch.

Must be the mid level engine.

The 1.6 Ecoboost in the Fiesta ST is 197hp and 214lb-ft. Most 2.0L are 260+ these days. Sounds like BMW left something on the table.

Gives them lots of room for a John Cooper Works model, which will probably be an $8k premium for slightly different ECU software and some cosmetic bits.

Not a typo. This new 2.0L engine has a lot of headroom for future power increases. Check out MotoringFile for a lot more detailed info on the 1.5 and 2.0. The 2.0 should easily put out 300+HP if MINI/BMW decide to at a later date (like for JCW and GP variants). But reality is the new Cooper S is plenty quick...

Biggest deal IMO is that the base Cooper with that 1.5L is turbo with high torque numbers and significantly increased acceleration. Not sure what the 1.5L will sound like in the MINI, but the same engine is used in the BMW i8 and it sounds pretty awesome.
