It seems like Subaru has a good recent track record with crash safety ratings.

IIRC as far back to 2002 Subaru had steel rods in their B Pillars that could not be cut by the jaws of life.

My neighbour is the fire chief, and years ago he was telling me about the special training that they had to get into two brands: Subaru and Mercedes.  This was prior to 2002...

Volvos and formerly SAABs have incredibly strong A-pillars to deal with moose-vehicle accidents...
