Yeah and when I did the math at the pump it was actually 7.9!

That's about the best I could do in my Protege in similar driving...  Wow how engines have come.  In all fairness, the base design of the engine in my Protege is from the early 90s...

I don't think it's just the engine - it's the whole package working in concert. Sorta like what Mazda touts as Sky-Activ but without the marketing logo's attached.

This is true.

I've noticed lately cars certainly "glide" longer than they use to.  Better bearings, lower rolling resistant tires, slicker transmissions etc.  Makes a huge difference.  Come off the highway at 110km/h and I'm still going 90 when I get to the stop sign.

^Yep.

Semi-related:
My Cherokee used to slow going downhill with full-time 4WD engaged.  Ffffffffffffriction.  Even in 2WD it wouldn't coast very far.

Ahh yes, you are correct.  Weight, better driveline efficiency, aerodynamics, etc.

Yes, I've noticed the long coast too.  The Forester feels like you've slammed the brakes on when you chop the throttle compared to the Corolla.  The Highlander has full time AWD and it has far less resistance than the Subaru, but nothing I've owned comes close to the Corolla for feeling like it could coast all the way to the, well, the coast!!   ;D

I find both the Prius and truck coast a long way, the BMW comes to stop if you take your foot off the gas
