There will always be manufacturers that skirt the mainstream, and I think our marketplace is more fun and interesting because of it.

Absolutely agree.  It's too bad that 2 MNFRs that best exemplified "skirting the mainstream" (at least in North Amercia) - Suzuki and Saab - are dead (or soon will be).  And you can probably throw Mitsubishi in that category, too.  But let's hope Volvo can keep going - it appears like their Chinese owners are now putting more resources into them than Ford did towards the end...

I think Volvo could benefit from forming a partnership with Mazda.  Mazda could share the SkyActiv engines, some exterior designs.  Volvo could provide the AWD, the wagons, the safety, great seats, and the interior.  I think it's a win-win.  Mazda on the more affordable end, and Volvo on the more premium, in line with Acura and Buick (not cross shoppers, just the premium segment)

Chinese ownership does not scream quality reputation,

while i'd agree Chinese ownership doesn't sound great.   I think people have to remember it's ownership, not manufacturing.  The cars are still being built in the same place, same factory.
I think a plant is getting built in China but to build Volvos for the Chinese market.

blind spots, why don't just adjust their mirrors properly?

no matter how much mirror adjustment you do, there's usually still going to be some sort of blind spot.
some cars are worse than other and this is why a quick, over-the-shoulder check is needed.

Why don't the dealers ignore the American regulations and stock the european convex mirror glass? Even easier.
