Tree Prognosis
« on: August 31, 2012, 03:41:23 pm »
I brought in a local arborist to diagnose my stressed out tree and it's not good. It's is full of black knot and has a year or two at best.

Because it provides a natural privacy screen I scrambled today to find options. The most economic is 15' high White Cedars spaces at 16-24 inches.

I phones and emailed around for quotes for 26 trees to be supplied, delivered, and installed. The range is $70-$600 per tree  ???  :rofl2:. The farther away from Oakville the cheaper the price.

I went with the $115/tree option  :)

Too bad - FYI and you probably already know, the white cedars are very slow growing if you're looking for quick growth.

Yes, hence the 15' foot height. There is a rule of thumb in the tree world. Grow fast, die young. Grow slow, never die. I could not believe the dewd who did a site visit and quoted me $600/tree. Lesson learned, next time close the garage door so the TT RS and S2000 are out of sight  :)

I think we've gotten to the root of the problem... The farther away from Oakville the cheaper the price. :D

Good choice, though. Trees provide a much better privacy option than any fence ever will (even assuming they'd ever let you get away with a 15' fence).

Also, tree people quote height including the burlap roots......  ::)

Yes, bastards. That is why asked for 15' when I need 12'

Our birch was looking pretty bad and most had died off in the neighborhood, we had the soil injected with some stuff and been ever since and that was 20 years ago
Could be worth a try

It looks like t's on a Choke cherry tree.
The fungus is highly contagious and it will kill the tree eventually. I have been fighting it for two years on one of my Choke cherry trees. You want to carefully trim and remove this stuff and burn it.

CONTROL
Cultural

Plant resistant species. Japanese plum varieties are less susceptible than most American species. Purchase disease-resistant trees that are free of abnormal swellings or visible knots.
Pruning is the most important control measure. Research has shown pruning can reduce infection by 80%. Prune off all knots in late winter or early spring before growth starts. Bury, burn, or compost all discarded plant material. Pruning cuts should be made at least four to eight inches below any swellings or knots because the fungus grows beyond the edge of the knot. Pruning tools should be sterilized between cuts using 1 part bleach to 4 parts water.
Apply a delayed dormant oil spray just before bud break to destroy spore-bearing structures. This must be applied for two consecutive years since black knots produce spores for at least that long.

I got that speech from the Tree Doc. He also said to get a sharp pruner and a bucket of water with bleach. After each cut 12' about the fungus clean the pruner in the solution as not to spread the disease up the branch. He said my tree has brain cancer and good luck.

But no berries  ??? Some hybrid freak. I may wait a year and prune in the fall. I do like the wall of solid cedar option.

Yeah, it's just an ornamental tree. If you're looking for a good fast growing, dense tree try an ivory silk lilac.
