Is this thing still the corporate twin of the Ford Escape.  The interior of the new Escape looks way way better than this Mazda.

Not anymore. Ford and Mazda have largely gone their separate ways. The CX-5 is the first of the new SkyActive platformed cars. It will share with the Mazda6 and probably other vehicles in the lineup. Mazda is looking to reuse as much of the platform technology across all of their cars is what they have said.

According to an article I read in Automotive News, the CX-5 will replace both the Tribute AND the CX-7 ... sounds a bit weird to me, and yes the CX-7 is much better-looking.

All articles confirm the stick is only available with fwd, but the others do the same (RVR, Juke, Tiguan).

High-res press pics really spruced up my impressions of the interior - it looks better than what we can see here.

When it came to handling and ensuring that the CX-5 lived up to its fun-to-drive claims, the engineers looked to the Europeans for inspiration. They fine-tuned the front suspension geometry with the 7-degree caster angle favoured by the Germans, rather than the five degrees of most other Japanese cars, resulting in a more front-planted feeling at high-speed.

I'd try my best to get my wife into one. Only if the 2.2L diesel is underhood. 173hp/310lbs-ft of torque ;)

^^The 5 speed is fine in our Forester.  I have to be going about 115km/h or so before the tach goes over 3000rpm.

This still petty high reving, for a 2.5L engine, I want a relax 2000 rpm at around 100km, so is more like 2400rpm at 120km/h.... I really don't care much about the lack of torque problem when on the top gear as thats what a manual transmission is for, to enjoy the down shift and rev it up to red line when power is required   ;D

My 2002 CR-V is the worst, it hits 3000 rpm at 105km on 5th gear, there are some people out there actually added the TSX 6th gear to the CR-V to make the rev drop to like 2400rpm at 100km .....

I can't explain exactly what it is, but the front of this looks simply odd to me.  Not really a fan at all.

Did you read the article ?!
"The new CX-5 and Escape, however, are completely different vehicles and share no parts."

especially considering the cost of the vehicle...how you can design such a nice looking and capable vehicle, then crap the bed with the cup holder is mindboggling.

 :rofl2:

That cargo area is larger than I expected, I'm impressed. And the 6MT would be awesome on this CUV. I'm really looking forward to this skyactiv technology from mazda. Fuel efficiency, performance, and additional interior volume, mazda sure knows how to make likeable cars. And what's that, a diesel is coming soon? A diesel CUV in NA... that sounds really nice, I'm sad it won't sell well though.

Don't rule anything out until the official release.

That said, I have no interest in AWD anyway. :) FWD and Nokian winter tires is all I need.

I like the steering wheel and instrument cluster...looks sporty...or Zoom Zoom...but the center stack looks like something from the 90s, the rest is just...meh (window switches look like they were lifted from the Dodge Avenger/Caliber)...and yup, I saw the X1 resemblance...which to me makes it look old some way??

What is with everyone going on about a manual trans??  Very few sell in North America...the manual transmission is being slowly phased out, and people are too busy multitasking to give a cr@p!!  They just don't have the appeal to the majority, so MFGs sell to the majority and we (the enthusiasts) get to drive boring ho-hum mobiles...I think I am going to start buying older vehicles that are more involving to drive, instead of the ones that drive themselves (Volvo's that brake for you, just incase you are too busy texting behind the wheel??)

And does ABS get in the way for you guys as well??  If you are on black ice, you get no brakes...not a good situation if you crest a hill to see a sharp turn at the bottom and your vehicle won't let you scrub off any speed... :o (don't ask)

New cars are quite incredible, but the electronic nanny's are making it easier for the bad drivers to keep driving...make the testing harder and ensure that the driving public is deserving of the priviledge...

Sorry, end rant!!

Later.

The first half of your message is a rant against manual transmissions, the second half is a rant against nanny features. Automatic transmissions have got to be the biggest nanny in the world.

I'm in the market for a brand new vehicle and it sure as hell will have a manual transmission. I know us manual drivers are part of a minority but the market is still reasonable in Montreal, Victoria, interior BC, etc.

BTW, the Mazda 3 Skyactiv MT cruises at 120km/h at about 2,800 RPM and 100km/h at about 2,300RPM. I expect the CX-5 to be less if they use slightly larger diameter tires than the Mazda 3.
