Buying new cuv
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:47:50 pm »
Anyone do the crv vs rav4 vs forester vs tiguan vs rogue vs escape vs whatever lately?

So far, Drove a crv ex... Meh.   Was very comfortable, powerful enough.

Price was good.   I believe there's a refresh coming tho in 2014...

No power lift gate, which normally don't care about, but wife has a shoulder issue.  Surprised it wasn't offered.

Any experiences?  Any missing from my list?  AWD a must.  We are two adults with a seven year old.

On paper, the subaru looks appealing..

Thanks..

AWD with power lift gate?  Subaru Forester XT Touring.  Test drove it for a week, and fell in love.  Gobs of power - I'm surprised I didn't get pulled over.

What about the CX-5?  Similar power to the CRV...great on gas, I would at least take it for a test drive.

Hot segment. My short list would be the Forester, RAV, and CX-5. Sante Fe would be worth a look too.

The Forester XT touring does not have power gate... Hmmm

2.5i touring or better does, but you need to get the limited pkg or better in XT...

Typo on website?

I bought a CX-5GT two months ago.
Final 3 that I did test drive were
1. CX-5
2. CR-V
3. Forester

I also looked at other SUVs previously in the year.
Notes:
-Didn't like the Kia Sportage low height rear turning lights
-Didn't like the RAV-4 interior sloped dash
-Sante Fe is more of a tweener... larger than a compact but smaller than a mid-size like a Highlander or Explorer.
-Didn't like Sante Fe and Escape interior dash which seems to "jut" out towards you taking up some interior space. Escape felt small on the inside.
-Wasn't too fond of the Forester kooky steering wheel buttons http://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php/topic,84388.msg904887.html#msg904887 , boring boxy style and CVT. But stats-wise its pretty hard to beat. Also has power lift-gate
-CR-V has a very large interior felt luxurious but rather bland.
-Rogue has a small interior and ancient in terms of design; a new version to come out very soon.
-Tiguan also is smaller CUV with smaller rear cargo space (not very useful); probably also one of the priciest when you add in the options.

My apologies.  The one I drove was indeed the Limited, not the Touring.

I just went through a similar shopping comparison

mainly looked at the cx-5, crv and rav 4

this vehicle is for work and so budget was very strict as I didn't want to be out of pocket personally - so that ruled out the Forester

cargo room in cx5 was too small and it felt a little claustrophobic in the driver's seat

rogue was too small

I have a grudge against Ford (had a Taurus wagon- it blew up >:()

Mitsubishi outlander looked nice but read article that suggested due to low sales volumes the dealer network is very weak and could go the way of Suzuki making future parts/repairs expensive

rav was very comparable but interior was all over the place- could not get heated seats without moving way up in trim level/price- did not have lever in cargo area to fold seats down- crv has rear headrests that fold themselves down so that the seat goes nearly flat

but biggest downfall of the rav was the backseat- a good 4" narrower than the crv - we have 2 carseats in the back and I wouldn't be able to get my butt in the middle should we want to take a 5th passenger
maybe not an issue for you but something to be aware of
also the "eco" and "sport" drive buttons on the rav are out of sight and very awkward to reach for
I found the rear sightline much bigger in the crv

went with the 2013 CRV LX AWD- just got it Friday
I felt the same when test driving it- just kinda "meh" nice- but.....not exciting
however- the more I drive it the more I like it

there are quite a few cuv comparison articles out there that I found very useful

good luck!

Drove the Forester...  Cant say I fell in love, but it's pretty good.  This was a 2.5i touring..

Actually, I think the CRV is much quieter.    Sat in the back for part of test drive and was surprised at the road and wind noise.

The cargo area seemed shallow as well.   Maybe subarus running gear takes up a bit of space under that floor.

Drove rav4. ... We might have a winner..  Pretty much on par with CRV, quiet and tight.

To get the power lift gate you need to buy the limited though...
