Long term storage
« on: February 03, 2011, 07:40:15 pm »
A friend will not be driving his 2006 Accord (with 105K on it) till August 2011. The car has been bulletproof so far.It will sit on the driveway. The gas tank is 3/4 full and oil change is scheduled in May which he will skip.Any tips on what he should do to ensure that there are no problems in/after August and the car stays reliable.

I would do the oil change now, add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank and inflate the tires ~5 psi over recommended pressure.

Covering it might be a good idea too and crack a window slighlty open to let the heat out if it is covered.

What kind of driveway matters as well. A car sitting too long on an asphalt driveway might leave an impression during the hot summer days. Doubt it would hurt the tires but adding additional air is a good idea.

Every fall I park my bike for 6 months and do pretty much what has been mentioned here:
change the oil
add gas stabilizer to the tank
slightly over-inflate the tires
wash it
put a cover on it
hook up a Battery Tender

Then in the spring I fire it up and we're off.  At that point my car under goes the same procedure for the next 6 months.

BTW, I use a Battery Tender Jr., less then $40 at any good battery shop, or under $25 from the USA.  It goes on the car battery too.
And don't bother starting the engine every few weeks.
