Product Review: Black & Decker battery booster
« on: January 20, 2011, 03:03:39 am »

The new Black and Decker JUS500B 500-amp jump starter offers a few design improvements over earlier battery boosters, such as circuitry that prevents operation if the cables are attached incorrectly - but it lacks a 12-volt receptacle, says Paul Williams.

This and similiar units are well worth the $$$$'s. Can't remember how many times I've used my Canadian Tire Eliminator (700Amp) booster in the last 5 yrs.
note: It is important to keep them fully charged so don't leave them in the trunk. It is a crisp -25(without windchill ) here in the 'Peg now.
Thanks Paul.......a reminder for me to take  it in to recharge.....and to thaw out too!!!     ;)

...Or if you already have a charger, like any car enthusiast would, you can buy the smallest car battery at costco. They even come now with carrying handles, at half the price and use it to jump start a car with a dead battery or to get extra amps in the coldest mornings by plugging it in parallel with the existing battery. But if +/- if not your forte' then the B&D is the magic box for you  ;D
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

Or, even more simple, carry jumper cables and ask someone for a boost   :).

I received a Canadian Tire version as a gift a couple years back.  Never used it, tried to keep the charge on it by plugging it in every once in a while, but after just over a year it was shot.  I found it to be too much of a hassle.

In my experience, anything with a Black & Decker label on it has been a complete and utter POS.

Bump/push starting usually work, hasn't for 20 years since cars all went to fuel injection.  If you don't have enough juice to fire up the fuel pump and injectors you can push it around all day without it firing.  I can't even bump start my motorcycle with a dead battery and it's carbureted.
I have a Crappy tire booster pack, I've already used it twice this winter.

If you have problems with any Black and Decker products its obvious you are useing them incorrectly as I have tools that are almost 40 years of age made by them that still work great. They are NOT Industrial strength type of tools but for the average homeowner they will do a good job if not pushed too far. I have both jumper cables as well as a 800 amp booster in the shop and depending on where the dead battery is located I decide which ones to use. One set of cables I have in welding cable grade is over 22 feet long along. They are handy to have in the trunk or in the back of my truck.
