How about Bangkok to Shanghai, via Saigon?
« Reply #21 on: November 27, 2010, 07:13:13 pm »
On Friday, sitting in my truck in a snowstorm in the middle of yet another difficult project, I got thinking I can't wait for mid Jan, need a holiday NOW!

So...this is what I am thinking of:

Fly to Bangkok next week, spend a week in N. Thailand, then head to Saigon, working my way slowly up to Hanoi where I bus to Nanning and then train it to Shanghai, flying home after about 5 weeks total.

Assuming Shanghai will be cold by then but I thought a quick look at the 'New China' (haven't been there since 1991) would be interesting after R&R in the tropics.

Should be doable, no?

Sounds like a fun and interesting trip.

I just got back from a few days in Beijing and found it fascinating. Shanghai, from what I hear, is far more cosmopolitan and modern than Beijing - I'm sure you would hardly recognize it from the China you remember from 1991.

Some pictures here from Thailand:

and Cambodia:

Carwise, Thailand is dominated by Toyota and Honda, Bangkok seems especially fond of bright pink Toyota Corolla taxis. Seen some interesting models we don't get, a Toyota wagon/station wagon (like a Matrix, but nicer), and lots of Honda City sedans.

Cambodia is also dominated by Toyota, but even more so by Daelim (sp?) and Honda scooters.
