During the 1950s, GM produced three futuristic Firebird show cars with gas turbine engines.  Though impractical for production, they expanded styling horizons and tested public opinion.

All the other sources I've found indicate that the car pictured as the Firebird II is actually the Firebird III (1958).  The Firebird II had two circular intakes in the nose, with a single plexiglas canopy over the driver and passengers.

You are correct. Firebird II with Firebird III in the background.

The concept Firebirds seperate clear domes would make it impossible for a guy to hear his wife talk. They should build a retro version of this car now incorporating this feature! G.M. would get great publicity if it was the first to show a concept "sky car". There is a Jetsons episode from '66 where they go shopping for one. Were the animaters inspired by the concepts plexiglass domes?  :rofl:
