Unlocking Iphone
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:18:18 am »
What is the story on unlocking an Iphone
Would like to pick up an Iphone for the wife & me
She still has about a year left on her bell plan, I can get new Iphone for around 150 on a 3 year plan( I need a phone or battery for my cell phone)
I was thinking of maybe getting a used one, would that be any good?
I really do not want to get tried into a 3 year plan with any company at the moment

The reason for getting a Iphone, is that there is always someone around who has that can help you out if you have a problem

Depends on the os running.  The latest cannot be unlocked.  So buying new is pretty much out of the question.

You can buy the phone outright and get it unlocked from apple but it won't be 150 more like 600.

Only way is really to pay full pop or buy used with an old OS on it.

So then you better off to get a plan since it appears you really do not discount if you have your own phone

And FYI carriers subsidize the phone only if you get a data plan.

That's cool dr_spock.  Looks like it won't work for a new device though as it requires your shsh blobs to have been backed up.  But it means I can update my ipad finally.  I have the tethered jailbreak.

Looks like you could possibly tether jailbreak, backup and then untether jailbreak.  Interesting.  No bluetooth right now though so not perfect yet.

It looks like the wife can get an upgrade now from BELL, but to switch carries it would cost $360
Time to chech out Bell packages
I see Costco does not carry any Apple products in their store

In the Ajax store they had NO Ipods or Iphones

I guess , the Bell guy I talk to yesterday was wrong, my wife line no upgrade  :(

Also found out if we switch to smart phones we lose our plan that has 500 mins of long distance include
So that could be a big cost if I lose those mins

So really do not what I should do now  ???
Easier to buy a car

Cell phones are very complicated, they do it to maximize your confusion, to maximize their profits.

Exactamundo.  We were going to get new phones: maybe staying with Rogers, maybe moving to a pay as you go.  Some reasonable priced phones, don't need qwerty, don't need smart phones. would be prepared or not to sign a new contract.  After spending a few hours researching we just got new batteries and stayed where we are.

You mean least dropped calls and all that?

I would think they're all about the same.

I've been pretty happy with Rogers. They're all overpriced, but Rogers is actually reasonable about giving you a deal if you call in and threaten to cancel. From what I've heard, it's a lot harder to get a deal out of Bell or Telus. FWIW, Bell's customer service is atrocious. I'll never use them for any service again after my experience with them.

In terms of coverage, I think they're all the same. Bell and Telus use the same network, so their coverage is identical, anyway.

Not true.  Telus and Bell are different.  I know in Cornwall for instance my Bell phone doesn't work very well at all, yet my Mom's telus is 100% all the time.
