webpages and 16x9 aspect ratio
« on: January 10, 2011, 10:33:32 pm »
Not a real fan the the 16x9 laptops/monitors over the last few years... webpages still tend to be vertical but the screens are more horizontal..

How do you handle this situation : There's a slide show thingy.  It's like half way down the page, which puts it just about outside the viewable area of the screen (when the scroll bar is at TDC).  So you scroll down to see the image.  Each time you click "next", the next image loads and the browser resets the scroll to TDC.

Try this : http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/suvs/1012_2011_jeep_compass_first_drive/photo_11.html

Is there an easy fix, other than zooming out?  Probably more of a browser issue?

I get frustrated with poorly designed web sites like that too.  Instead of just loading the next picture in the slide show, it re-loads the entire page, forcing you to scroll down or re-size.

To see how it should be implemented, check this picture gallery out:

Just loads up each picture without re-loading the whole page, so your position stays where it was once you move down to the pictures.

So not really a screen thing, but more a web page design issue.

I can see 90% of the image on my 1680x1050 (16:10) laptop screen.   I have to use the scroll button on my laptop to see the bottom bit.   They have too much stuff at the top of the page and reload the page.  Bad design.  Use an input device that makes scrolling easy.

I have 1920x1080 and I can see the same 90% of that slideshow. A bit annoying having to scroll down every time, but my MS mouse prolly has a good resolution and the scroll wheel is light and smooth. I guess it takes getting used to, but I'd rather have a few pics to not load well than having to watch movies on a "square" screen.
P.S. I use Firefox;
P.S. II CTC shows great, so I'm good.   :)

I don't see this as a browser issue, more of a design issue. Look at the layout...
