The civilian version of the German military's Type 181, which itself was a modern version of the Kubelwagen from the 2nd World War, the Thing was like a "beach buggy or dune buggy with doors" says auto historian, Bill Vance.

It's utterly simplistic....just like the original jeep. Wished that I owned both.    ;)

There was a fellow here in Winnipeg that used to autocross his Thing.  Did quite well, too.
