The civilian version of the German military's Type 181, which itself was a modern version of the Kubelwagen from the 2nd World War, the Thing was like a "beach buggy or dune buggy with doors" says auto historian, Bill Vance.

It's utterly simplistic....just like the original jeep. Wished that I owned both.    ;)

There was a fellow here in Winnipeg that used to autocross his Thing.  Did quite well, too.

Wow. didn't remember they were in production for so long.

My brother, the ultimate non car guy, really loved these in the 70's.
