Good article but it's not that useful to compare modern smaller cars to the big boats of yester-year.  A big modern vehicle with stability control and side airbags is a lot safer than a smaller modern vehicle.  It comes down to simple physics -- greater weight beats lighter weight every time.  Before people start talking about SUV's and rollovers that is old news -- stability control with curtain airbags that stay inflated have negated those past issues.
