Test Drive: 2010 Ford Taurus SEL AWD
« on: January 18, 2010, 04:06:07 am »

The all-new 2010 Ford Taurus puts Ford back in contention, says Assistant Editor Jil McIntosh, who finds it “drama-free,” and that’s a compliment. It’s big, comfortable and handsome, although some might find its dual-cockpit design a little overwhelming, she says.

Noteworthy is the reported combined fuel economy of 11.7 for the Taurus.  Last weeks test drive of the Toyota Matrix XR AWD reported 12.7 city, 9.0 hwy.  Don't know how similar the test conditions were for the 2 vehicles but the Taurus economy is impressive nevertheless, considering it weighs almost a 1000 lb more than the Matrix!   Good job Ford.

Are the Taurus numbers gov ratings while the Matrix economy numbers "real world"? That might explain it.

She wrote that she got 11.7...so that was her "real world" when she drove it.  To compare, shouldn't we just use the Transport Can ratings?  You're mileage may vary from that, as they say.

Official numbers are 11.7 for city and 7.4 for hwy, Jil averaged 11.2 in mixed driving in the cold.

I find the new Taurus a very nice execution, hope Ford replaces the 3.5L with the 305HP 3.7L found on the Mustang. Guess this engine could handle the car a bit better, even bringing better mileage numbers.

What got my attention is the fact that it's $10,000 more than a Legacy PZEV !
And still more than the Legacy Limited. Sorry Ford, still uninspiring. Nice car, but not as much value as some. IMHO.

Comparing whiskey and applesauce. The Taurus competes against the Maxima, Genesis sedan and Avalon. The Fusion (starting at $21k) is a competitor to the Legacy, Accord and Camry.

Reality is, Ford Fusion is the new Taurus.

And this car is the new Crown Vic.  :-X

(It actually weighs more than Crown Vic)
