How often do you do a full speed 0-60 in your echo ?     My GTI supposedly gets to sixty really well and even has launch control to help out. How often do I do that... never.  The rapid acceleration from rest is one of those things that the street racing law can theoretically get you for... just one squeak from a tire and if some OPP officer with painful hemorrhoids is there ... you are done.

My point is that 0-60 times are a useful number for comparisons IF you know the gearing of the car but unlike say 45-75 not all that useful in the real world on a real road.
The most radical revolutionary will become a conservative the day after the revolution.

^^^^I wasn't referring to anything you said.  Was referring to Cortinas numbers for the "hot hatch" version of the Fiesta.  And 0-60 in 9.9 seconds didn't strike me as hot-ish....

Correct me if I'm wrong but that is a "hot hatch" in a small car sold in the European market.  The 0-60 isn't as big of a deal...I think its more about how tossable it is on the narrow and curvy roads of Europe.

If they bring us a hot hatch version it'll have to be making 150hp or something along those lines.

Given that NA would probably get the 1.6 right off the bat...0-60mph in 9.9 seconds is faster than the Honda Fit and decent enough to get up to speed.

A sup-up engine is just important too in hot hatch.  :)

RR  I was not accusing you of anything  ;)   To a UK Fiesta buyer, 9.9 compared to maybe 12 or more for the diesel version his neighbour is buying  is quick enough.

I agree with IceandFire for a Fiesta to be "hot" over here it would have to do 0-60 a bit faster.   I wonder if it will be sold that way.... I suspect that Ford will sell EuroFocus as the hot hatch and leave the Fiesta as the economy champ.

Anyway. The sooner Ford gets them both over here the better.

IMO for the average driver powerband is needed in the speed range between 60-120, on ramp or passing, and most modern day engines are quite adequate.

Anyway some info regarding personalization options being shown at the Paris show,

NEW FIESTA GETS PERSONAL WITH FORD INDIVIDUAL

The new Ford Fiesta is getting personal!  Customers who have already fallen in love with new Fiesta’s chic interior can make it even more exclusive, thanks to Ford’s Vehicle Personalisation programme, Ford Individual, now extended to Ford’s all-new small car.

Two distinct themes have been developed for the new Fiesta, created to fit perfectly with new Fiesta’s eye-catching sense of style. For each theme, a collection of complementary pieces have been toned to enhance the expressive use of colour in new Fiesta’s interior.

The two Ford Individual themes are called simply ‘Red Style’ and ‘Blue Style’ – the striking ‘Blue Style’ is available for Fiesta Sport with the Brilliant Blue interior, while the elegant ‘Red Style’ is matched to Fiesta Titanium with the Soho interior environment.

It’s not just colour – Ford Individual also focuses on using high quality materials that are superior to touch and create a comfortable and luxurious environment. Central to this are the Windsor-quality leather sport seats and leather door panels, with contrasting silver stitching and matching leather gear shift knob. Door panels feature leather padding, while the seats themselves are embossed with the ‘Individual’ logo, supporting and cosseting occupants with flared side bolsters.

Comprehensive Pack treatments
The finishing leather touch is a unique, two-tone steering wheel, matched to the seats.  The soft leather is offset by Fiesta’s ‘Stirling Silver’ instrument panel centre stack and metallic accents to the door pull handles. Unique, velour floor mats with colour coordinated borders in contrasting double stitching are embroidered with the ‘Individual’ logo, adding both style and protection.

A hot hatch?  The STi is a Hot Hatch!!

The Focus line should be:

Focus Wago and Focus Five Door with either 1.8L-ish high efficiency gas engine (getting Civic/Corolla type economy) or super-economical 1.6-1.8L turbo diesel that matches the hybrid models of other makes.

Focus Sedan, as above.  Personally, I think the sedan is moot with having a wagon and five door, but Americans still love their trunks, so Ford must offer it.

Ford Focus "Warm Hatch."  Give us a 180-200hp Focus that is priced in the $24-26K range.  FWD, but with some handling and a sweet shifting 5 or 6 cog manual.

Ford Focus "Hot Hatch."  325hp, AWD and all the go fast bits Ford can cram into the five door chassis.  $34-36K, undercutting the STi and EVO.  6-speed manual and offer a Ford racing blue with white stripes model that looks like it's about to roll off the WRC trailer...

Sounds alot fancier than:

Your choice of interior colours are 'blue' and 'red'.  Or 'black' and 'beige'.  Or 'gray' and 'tan'.   ::)

Fortune favours the bold!

I think NA is ready for Diesel more now that any other time. What bloney.  :-\

http://www.nancap.com/Todays%20news/September%202008/forduscanthave.htm

TOO PRICEY TO IMPORT

First of all, the engines are built in Britain, so labor costs are high. Plus the pound remains stronger than the greenback. At prevailing exchange rates, the Fiesta ECOnetic would sell for about $25,700 in the U.S. By contrast, the Prius typically goes for about $24,000. A $1,300 tax deduction available to buyers of new diesel cars could bring the price of the Fiesta to around $24,400. But Ford doesn't believe it could charge enough to make money on an imported ECOnetic.

Ford plans to make a gas-powered version of the Fiesta in Mexico for the U.S. So why not manufacture diesel engines there, too? Building a plant would cost at least $350 million at a time when Ford has been burning through more than $1 billion a month in cash reserves. Besides, the automaker would have to produce at least 350,000 engines a year to make such a venture profitable. "We just don't think North and South America would buy that many diesel cars," says Fields.

The question, of course, is whether the U.S. ever will embrace diesel fuel and allow automakers to achieve sufficient scale to make money on such vehicles. California certified VW and Mercedes diesel cars earlier this year, after a four-year ban. James N. Hall, of auto researcher 293 Analysts, says that bellwether state and the Northeast remain "hostile to diesel." But the risk to Ford is that the fuel takes off, and the carmaker finds itself playing catch-up—despite having a serious diesel contender in its arsenal.

60% of MB's sold in Canada are now diesels.  VW was over 50%.  If Subaru, a small niche player, can bring a diesel to market in Canada (which it looks like they will) why can't FORD?  Once again, poor planning.  They just didn't make plans to market small fuel efficient cars in North America, and now they're paying the price...

...massive losses.

With a fairly economical gas engine, the new 1.6L, with the higher price of diesel and the price premium for the diesel engine, I wonder if in the end it would be more economical to run a diesel car? Not to mention that in general the gas cars are quicker than the diesel cars.

Finally a picture that shows not so good things about Fiesta (see photo #4):
http://www.wheels.ca/photoPlayer/357998

1. No armrest/center floor storage
2. The rear seats fold with a big lump.
3. Painted metal surface for the back of the rear backrests (I would much prefer a strong seatback, but lined in carpet).
