Chrysler 300 Question
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:51:02 pm »
I was looking at buying a 300 a couple of years ago and I recall both reading and being told that the V-6 models (base, touring and limited) would be getting the 5-speed Mercedes automatic by the second or third model year.  I had a 2008 300 Touring as a rental recently and noted that it still had a 4-speed.  The Chrysler website says that all V-6s only come with the 4-speed.  Was I dreaming that the 5-speed was going to be added to V-6s or did Chrysler just drop the idea to keep the retail cost of the car down?

Thanks
Mike

I think the decision was made before DC was scrapped, but you may be right.  I had two Intrepids with the 4-speed and it isn't a great transmission.  I hear that it isn't reliable either.  I remember Bill Gardiner on Motoring TV saying that he could always tell when it had snowed because there would be a rash of failed Chrysler transmissions.  Apparently shifting them to rock out of a snowbank or on ice caused a VERY early death.

MY daughter and family just received a new Mercedes C300 last week and its a 7 spd tranny  auto now of the 4-o-matic design.  Probably hard to say what they will do now. :)

The Magnum and Charger SXTs with the 3.5L that I had as rentals in 2007 came with the 5 speed auto. It looks like that feature was removed for 2008 though. Really too bad too because the extra cog really made the difference between tepid and reasonable performance.
