Garmin nuvi 350 (refurbished) $179.99. This one has text to speech, reads out street names. It doesn't say "turn right in 50 meters". 350 is the point where text to speech starts in the Garmin lineup.

Always check the www.shopbot.ca site, you'll be surprised the prices that it shows at different stores.

e.g. Garmin nuvi 650, one of the top of the line versions. $277

All you need is a map, a 'paper map', you know, the ones we had back in the day...

The Nuvi 260 has Text-to-Speech.  That's a helluva price, though.  :)

Apple can decimate the phone, gadget market completely. They aren't allowing anyone to develop applications independently, other sat-nav companies won't be able to sell their applications for iPhone and other pedantic restrictions. They're mimicking Microsoft here.

Pretty simple actually, I was looking at the way other mobile platforms work. Anyone developing applications for iPhone needs to pay $99 to Apple for a license. Thats just one of the things. Read through.
Maybe they will come around and soften the restrictions, they've just started.

Google's Android is around the corner.

It may not be a good deal if it's a "c" version (comes with only map of Canada and bordering states)

The Garmin 260 has complete maps of Canada and the USA, as well as (I've heard) limited mapping of Mexico.  The Garmin 200C, which was on sale at CT a couple weeks ago, was a Canada and border-states affair, which is still sufficient for most users.  :)

Yup... I've even got a geography degree to help me navigate.  Of course, "back in the day" we also used an abacus to help do math (no computer meltdowns then, eh?); or fed the horses to pull the wagon (no hefty fuel costs); and not pot-holed paved roads to worry about -- just dirt ones.  Let's all lament progress here.   ::) ::)

You're welcome to stop every ten minutes in a new-to-you, big city and review your map when you're lost (with traffic getting irritated behind you).  My time is more valuable than that and I like my GPS unit.

The iPhone is a neat thing -- my brother cracked his a short while ago so he can use skype to call for free in his worldly travels.  It's got all those little fancy features and do-dads, but nobody has a lock on the maps themselves like Garmin.
