Ne R3 confirmed. Like the old FD models of R1 & R2, new RX-8 will have an R3 model. 50kg lighter than the regular models.

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/01-13-2008/0004735340&EDATE=

In short:

1) A variable red-zone added to the tachometer

2) Larger exhaust pipes (now measuring 90 mm across)

3) Adding a trapezoidal strut tower bar and enhancing the local rigidity of
the front suspension tower areas.

4) Rear suspension geometry has been reconfigured for better handling performance

5) Driveshaft rigidity is improved, lowering NVH levels and improving performance
(Q: what is the meaning of NVH? I guess the "V" stands for vibrations but I can not figure it out about NVH)
6) Differential gear ratio on manual transmissions goes from 4.444 to 4.777 (7% shorter) for improved off-the-line performance

7) 6 speed manual version and 6 speed automatic will be available

8) Power unchanged.

9) New R3 sport package with Bilstein shock absorbers and front suspension crossmembers filled with urethane foam. Filling the crossmembers makes for a smoother ride, minimized NVH and greater suspension control.

10) 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels with high performance tires (for the R3 version)

11) Recaro sport seats for the R3 version

12) Sport package, Touring package and GT package will be available with some new goodies as automatic wipers, auto headlights, bluetooth hands free phone adaptor, electric driverīs seat now with memory

for some reason the rear reminds me of the Elise.  ???

Nicely done except for the wheels.

headlights are a bit generic though. MKI has more uniquely syled headlight housing. this unit seems to be from an mx-5 or mazda3.

recaro seats!

New gauges

Sat in one of these the other day at the local dealer, the seats are absolutely awesome!!  Very nice car indeed, they had a red one in the showroom, and a black and a white one outside... I don't know if I could choose between black or white... I love the wheels too!

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

All in all just a visual refresh. I'd been really hoping for a redesigned RX8 by the time I returned the 6. Ah well.

I agree, but the pictures don't do it justice, it looks really mean and low in the flesh.

I am determined not to test drive it!

Bob...I may pick up an '07 GT model today...Mazda has taken off $14,000 from the '07 MSRP...what can you get for $27,000 brand new?

Oh the rotary sound...brilliant...and so smooth...

Not a fan of the new model's front end...which helps my decision.

Yeah I've been seeing those at some Mazda dealerships with giant markdowns. Was thinking about one myself before this thing, but didnt do it.

How about this one?

Sat in a black one in the showroom recently. Those wheels look mean on it in black.

I really, really don't want a black interior this time.  The 40th Anniversary edition with the grey/red is nice...remind you of someone's car Oz?

If I can't get that...the Galaxy Grey Mica with the Taupe/Tan looks good to me.

Maybe I'll wait 'till tomorrow and hope they're all gone!!   ;D
