Chevrolet Epica/Suzuki Verona, 2004-2006

Chevrolet Epica/Suzuki Verona, 2004-2006As there is little reliability information available about these Korean-built GM Daewoo cars, it might be wiser to purchase a better known mid-size sedan with a documented reliability history, advises Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.

Personally, I'd sooner buy a used Malibu, even with the possible problems that could bring rather than take a chance on a virtual unknown like the Epica or Verona.

Ouch.

I'm not surprised that this car has been orphaned. Will the Optra be far behind?

I'll be the first to say that I have never actually seen one of these cars on the road.  Heck, I've never seen one in person period.

Pretty rare cars; I just checked AutoTrader in Ontario for listings and was surprised to find 56 used Epicas listed (with a few 2004s going for less than $9,000!), and five Veronas.

Cheaper even than Red Book values, in many cases, but do you really want to buy the used car you've never heard of and can hardly find any information about? There's gotta be a reason they sold so badly new.
I used to work here.

I seen quiet a few, trouble is they so bland that just blend in. Daewoo don\\\\t make unreliable cars as rule. just cars that nobody seams to want. parts would be tricky too, but not for few years yet.

I've seen a few around. Quite attractive styling in a boring sedan sort of way. I'd be wary of getting parts for one in five years. The I6 with fwd is novel with only a few others having done that (Austin and Volvo that I can think of) - probably makes engine access tough.

I picked up a new 2000 Daewoo Lanos S for $11,995 - base.  86 HP and 5-speed manual, no air con (can't afford to with 86 horse!).  A relative of mine bought it off lease for $4,000 and has put 200,000 kms on it with only regular service.

The 'Epic' (pardon the pun) problem, as Chris topically noted, was in part cannibalism withing Chevy's own brand at the time.  In 2003/2004, if I recall:

1  the old Cavalier was being phased out at MASSIVE discounts
2  the new Cobalt was just rolling out the door
3  the Malibu was just recently launched
4  shoehorn in the Korean step-sibling Epica (formerly Leganza)
5  squeeze in Optra (still-born Nubria)
6  for good measure, toss in Aveo (Lano spiritual successor)

What was GM Canada thinking?  Depending on incentive and options, ANY of these cars would have been eating at the same $16-$21,000 range  ???  - or at least in range of someone to step up into payment wise.

And, am I the only person that has come to the realization that Ford's dominance of the truck market is because GM insists on splitting their market into TWO brands  ::)? They aren't far off Ford when you combine Chey and GMC's sales numbers.

Just sayin', that's all......

I always like the styling of this Epica/Verona design... in a world of Round shape design.... the boxy/edgy style seems to be catching my eyes....  anyone know the driving dynamic of this car??

but the point is well made, how am i going to fix it if it is going to break down?
