Can a brand new car drive on Highway?
« on: November 07, 2005, 03:44:12 pm »
Hello all,

I am just wondering does the new car need to break in prior to be driven on highway or it is ok to do so?  The salesman said it is not a problem, but i just a second opinion from the experts here  :o

Thanks

Should be able to if you could vary your speed, engine rpm, and change up/down gears...i.e. don't put cruise on and let it rip... :P

However, personally given a choice I would definitely like/try to break the car in via normal city driving with a bit of highway but not prolonged highway cruises.

Just don't be red-lining all the time (new or not) and all should be fine.

After the break-in period, I would recommend some redlining once in a while to rid your engine of carbon deposits...  ;D

As others have said, just drive it but don't abuse it for the first couple thousand kms. Vary your speeds but hiway is just fine, in fact, I prefer it. Don't use the cruise control right away.

This is what the Suzuki dealer told me.  Don't be afraid.  It won't break.

This is also what my Volvo mechanic said when I asked why my 850 performed better than my Dad's.  He asked about our driving styles.  My Dad is a good responsible, smooth accelerating, stick to the limit kind of guy, and I'm, well, me.  (Hey I live downtown, and was running late for my niece's christening in Stittsville, so 170km/h on the 417 was justified to get the godfather there on time!!!)  But the advice on varying highway speed should be taken.

Have fun with it - it's yours and it's new!!
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

Just drive it, I bought 2 cars new... ok one I only kept for 3 months, but the other I had for 3 years.  I drove it HARD from day 1 and never had an engine issue.  It was great on gas actually.  It's a myth ;)

:iagree: I have two positions for the throttle on anything I have owned….on and off…no issues.
