Besides the Honda Accord, how about a late 90's Nissan Maxima, Mazda Millenia S or Toyota Camry?

You don't loose oil with a bad piston ring, you burn it. The owner is possibly telling you stories to cover something up. Something dosen't add up right here with this car.

if he really wanted to hide the truth, he could simly say nothing about the new ring installation. he is even not sure whether it's piston ring or not. maybe he doesn't know too much about cars, just like me. is there any other rings inside the engine?

the owner mentioned he noticed the engine oil was becoming less for this car at about 70k km. he had the dealed checked the car and installed new rings. anyway you guys are right, it would be risky to get this car.

I like this one:

http://www.trader.ca/Search/Details.asp?mknm=64&Region=&subcategory=&CAT=1

92 Prelude, 1 owner, Honda service, 155K; ask $6,800.

Rust must be checked for of course to be considered. Also priced so you don't need full insurance; just manadatory coverages.  No collision for sure.

Maxima like suggested a possibility.  More expensive to run and maintain, but a solid runner.

There is a 98 SE in the Trader @94K.  Ask is $7850. private.  Seems low.

plenty of accords out there. don't be scared off by this one bad experience

maximas take premium i believe. holy cow, a 98 SE for 7850...here in BC that wud run at least 12k. a 97 max was asking 16k at the dealer. no joke.

Mountaineer:  Here is a 93 Acura Legend/139K/one owner/all receipts/estate sale/ask $6700.  Excellent cars if no rust.

i noticed the owner i decided not to buy his car based on the car inspection report and mechanic's comments.

Steve, thanks for your recommendation. how do you think about nissan sentra? it's not as overpriced as honda or toyota.

I think they are fine.  It is all about previous owner and the car's service history.  Oil should be changed every 5000 km.

Thanks for all the comments about "returning", I'm caught up with the joy of midterms and have peeked in the forum every so often... I still leave the advice to the experts :-)

One thing though - I do remember that someone mentioned if the owner doesn't have paperwork to prove a good service history it's better to move on to avoid grief in the future - I strongly agree with that statement now.  I was curious after I bought my car and asked around and no one (including my parents!) keeps service records though, so it might be tough.

Thats right. It takes effort to find a car with good service records.
