Congarats Shnak sounds like a nice car. As you noticed the 1.8T is a great engine, just not with the Auto tranny, IMO the 5sp manual is the only way to go with this engine. I also found that the V6 Passat was noticeably more nose heavy and less "tossable". FWIW I have had my 2003 Passat Wagon 1.8T 5speed wagon for 2 years and 40k km's and it hasn't had one problem (knock on wood).

I don't have not a single doubt that the 1.8T is a great engine with a manual transmission... but with the auto, it simply sucks!

Anyways, I'm bringing in the Golf in 15 minutes... Jetta tonight!!! Will take pictures tomorrow during daylight and post them.

Well I have the Jetta!! I was actually pulled over by a cop yesterday because I don't have my license plate yet, only a temporary paper sticked to my rear window... but since my window is tinted, he couldn't see it from his car...

Anyways, I really love the car! I'm liking the leather seats more and more. And the lumbar support really does miracles.

As soon as there's a clear and sunny day, I'll take pictures and post them!

I can't wait to go on a road trip now!

ARRESTED?  Really?  Don't you mean "I was STOPPED by a police officer..."?  Arrested?

Coming in late on this topic, but oh well.
First: Inco's alzheimer's is flaring up.  My Passat Wagon is a 2003 V6.  The A4 is a 1.8T with APR chip.
Second: Steve, the chip is an ECU modification.  The price I paid was $1000 CDN, going through a local distributor.  I think its more bang for the buck than any normally aspirated engine can gain from a chip mod.
Jeff: No more VR6's in current Passats. Older ones yes. 2003's have 30 valve V6's - the Audi engine.
KTM525: I agree completely - the V6 Passat is much more nose heavy than the 1.8T. Glad to hear your Passat is still trouble free.
FWIW, I run synthetic oil in both cars, with premium fuel.  Synthetic IS required for 1.8T's, to avoid the sludge issue.  A newly spec'd larger oil filter is also advised, to increase the paltry oil capacity of less than 4 litres for these cars.

Shnak - why did you flip your car anyway?  I thought you had come to terms with the squeaks & stuff.  Are you really getting any more room with the Jetta than you had with a four door golf?

Think Shnak just needed an automatic for his girly friend

I almost cringe at asking, but "how's the Jetta?"

Mark, I switched because I needed an automatic. The Golf and Jetta were close to last on my list for small cars with good automatic transmissions but after reading a little bit about their reliability (Siraqua helped on this) and driving a TDI w/ Auto (5 speed too!), I was convinced. Heads above a Mazda6 I4 w/ Auto, and similar to an Accord 4-cyl w/Auto, which is great.

There's no difference inside a Jetta vs. a Golf, except maybe an inch for rear passengers headroom. I'm gaining a lot of trunk space though! You can fit a lot more luggage in the Jetta than the Golf... but you can't put in big boxes, or small freezers, in the Jetta... it's a tradeoff I didn't mind since we'll probably end up buying a small SUV in 3-4 years, something like a CR-V.

And siraqua, the Jetta is great! None of the "tocking" noises coming from the ceiling I had in the Golf, no creakings around the radio dash either. One of the rear tweaters really doesn't like AM talk radio though, not sure how to describe it, it emits a kind of vibration, but I'll have that fixed on my next oil change.

The only other thing is the driver seat's leather side bolster that rubs against the side of the center armrest which is plastic. I'll wait a bit and see if it does the same thing when the leather isn't cold... if it does, I'll put something in between the side bolster and center armrest to prevent the friction.

Other than that, #1! Oh and it looks INCREDIBLE!

Still waiting on some nice weather to go wash my car and post pics of it...
