93 Pathfinder Won't start in cold weather
« on: October 20, 2004, 09:59:17 pm »
I have a 93 Pathfinder that has problems starting in cold weather.  In normal weather it is just fine but when it is around maybe -15 degrees thats when the problems start.  The car does not turnover at all I hear no noises or anything.  The battery has been replaced and so has the starter.  I was wondering if anyone had any advise as to why this happens.  Thanks in advance.

Well,  I think you need a block hear and you need to use thin oil during winter months.

Try plugging in the block heater and use 5W-30 motor oil with a new oil filter.

How do you get it started?  By boosting the battery?  If so, the battery is not getting a full charge, and you should have the charging system checked.

Without knowing much more, there is no way we can steer you in the right direction.  This type of problem is tough to track down without having the car to pour over...

I do have a block heater and it is plugged in when it won't start.  During the winter months last year I used the thinner oil as well.  It is also not started by boosting I have tried that and it makes no difference the only thing that seems to affect it is the temperature because when it goes in to get looked at the garage is heated and it starts perfectly fine.  Thanks for the insight though.

Could it be the starter solenoid?

Either that or maybe dirty/loose or frayed  battery cables (at battery and/or starter). Check all grounds as well. A poorly grounded circuit will give you many headaches.

It starts when it is inside Warm and Dry. I suspect it is a problem with Moisture getting into your Distributor area and being wet on the inside of the cap. Check the cap for small cracks and the wires as well as it dosen't take much moisture to cause a problem. There are spray seal products on the market that you apply to all of the components of the Ign. It seals it in a liquid plastic and prevents moisture from getting in all of the time. Hope this helps.

Does it start when it is plugged in????

I do not understand your reply.

(1) Open the hood,  Get a friend to hold the negative battery cable about four inches away from the battery,  then start the vehicle.  If it starts  try the next step.

(2) Take a look at the negative battery cable.  Follow it all the way to the engine block.  Loosen the bolt that is holding it and clean the area with sand paper and re-connect everything.  Try that and see what happens.

Please don't do that.

Its not a safe thing to do and We wouldn't want to hear of you or a friend being injured. At these cold times when it won't start try heating up the area of the Dist with a Hair Dryer so that any moisture will disapate quickly. If it starts then you have found the problem.

Okay,  Okay,  sorry.

Just remove the negative battery cable and clean the part that is connected to the engine.

If the terminal is covered in the White scuzzy stuff then make up a mixture of baking soda and water. Brush the mix onto the terminal and clean away the debris by rinsing with clear water. Use an old toothbrush or similar item to clean the terminal with as well.
