I am here on the invitation of the BigBadWolf. I am thinking of purchasing an new car. Or I could be swayed into buying used to save GST and PST.

I am a victim of mass marketing and advertising. I am considering a WRX. I was hoping that any WRX owners out there could give me the good, the bad and the ugly of owning such a steed. Is it economical in fuel consumption? For those of you in BC, what are the approximate annual insurance costs.

Groovy - welcome to the site. I can only comment on one of your queries; however, I think you are probably already aware that buying used (as opposed to new) doesn't remove the PST/GST. If you buy from a dealer, new or used, you pay both. If you buy used privately, you pay no GST but still pay PST on registration. There are, of course, other issues in buying used (truthfulness of seller, etc). If you need insurance info on a WRX in BC, just go to your ICBC agent as ask them for a quote.

Although I'm not a WRX owner, I did look very carefully at them before making my most recent purchase.  First off, let me say that I've driven 4 or 5 different 'Rexes' and I love them.  I can't praise Subaru enough for bringing this car to North America finally.  However, they're not an economy car from a fuel consumption standpoint (though they are from an interior finish standpoint).  

Being recognized as a performance car (and having the highest theft rate two years in a row), the insurance companies are particularly unkind to WRX-drivers.  

There are a few regulars on the board here with WRX's -- they'll be along shortly to give their low-downs.  :-)

If insurance and economy are a concern, what about considering a 'normal' Impreza?

I would be leery of buying a used WRX unless you know the owner. I am happy with my WRX in regards to the quality of the basic materials used. Groovy…..if you buy/lease a WRX the first thing to do is remove the RE-92’s and get real tires.
A WRX is not an economical vehicle to operate, that is not the intent…..especially when heavily modified.

One important note about insurance in BC, the wagon is significantly cheaper than the sedan.  With full discount, a guy at work here pays around $1800 / yr give or take.

Very fun drive, lots of used ones floating around.  That said, I think some dealers are still trying to flog off 04s - might find a killer deal on a new one.
