Or just buy the manual which doesn't have start/stop. Besides, manuals are much more fun to drive or so they say.

100% this.  Are there vehicles where the stop/start can be turned off permanently?  I have heard that the reason it has to be reset to on after every drive is for it to be used in calculating the fuel efficiency numbers and that's 100% the purpose of these start stop features existence.

This will only be a problem for the next 10 years or so and then everything will have some form of electrification and will function similar to hybrid's where it constantly turns on or off while driving.

If we are picking on systems that save fuel, I think I'd much rather this start/stop system than the cylinder deactivation tech that you find in GM V8's, at least with the start stop it's annoying and you might have to replace the starter a little more often, but with the cylinder deactivation it ends up being a MUCH bigger problem.

The gen 7.5 GTI also has the start/top with the DSG. While it is PITA, the rest of the car is so good that pressing that single button to disable it at every start has become second nature...like putting on the seat belt. The start/stop is also present in the Jetta automatic.

Does the a Mk8 have a dedicated button or is it buried in the infotainment?

Looks to be about 3-4 touches on the screen.  Wonder if there is a hot button you can program it to?

Leaving a fleet parking with a new MINI I of course stall the thing being "green" with the friction point, but then just pushing in the clutch restarted the engine - not a bad idea with a stick.

Subaru's stop/start is horrendous, the whole car shakes if it starts when you have your foot deep on the brake.

This week's gas-fed Soul has one too, but you barely feel it - YMMV!

At the end of the day, I don't mind start/stop in regular driving, and you can re-start the engine seconds before the green by just reducing the pressure on the brake pedal. But in stop and go traffic, I turn it off.

Hybrids have a much smoother stop/start because of the electric motor, and EV's really nail it of course  ;D

Can be programmed as a shortcut in the swipe down menu at the top of the screen. Disabling takes literally <1 sec.

Lesson re: why stop-start can't be permanently disabled on most cars... the main benefit to it is of course fuel savings, and more cynically, savings on the fuel economy label value. Anything that affects the car's fuel economy performance (stop-start, sport mode, etc.) must be counted in the rating unless it defaults off on ignition cycle. Ergo, most vehicles default back to normal mode and stop-start ON with ignition cycle.

For the GTI, I will note that the stop-start can be coded off with a scan tool like OBDeleven... not that we'd encourage such things  ::)

Keep a fairly light touch on the brakes after a complete stop and it may not activate (or just press the button...).

Or just plug in the aftermarket memory module that holds the button setting. No muss, no fuss

A quick google search suggests that OBDEleven may not be able to turn off the start/stop.

We all know this.  All stop start does is prematurely wear out, obviously the starter, must wear the heck out of the ring gear, and IMO engines due to the constant drop in oil pressure.  They all require extra battery reserve.  Ill thought out OBama mandate that will end up creating more carbon that it saves. At least Trump was good for one thing; reversed some of the Obama fuel mileage requirements.

So stop/start uses excess fuel but remote start doesn't ???    On the MDX it's 2 15 minute run times. Use it 5 months of the year.  Usually just once a day for one cycle.

Not with the new units saddled with the moronic tablet control.

No arguing Stop/Start defines the word DIABOLICAL perfectly.

characteristic of the Devil, or so evil as to be suggestive of the Devil.
